  1. Yvonne,

It looks as if you are quite happy with your Churchill trip and have presumably captured the polar bear images you

want. It is a good news in that I should explore this option which I think should be relatively less expensive. Would

you kindly give more details and, if possible, some links. Thank you.

    Joe

  2. Hi, Pete,

Shooting of Polar Bears at Churchill is top on my wish list. Unfortunately, I have been unable to find a reasonably priced tour dedicated for photographers as against those oriented for general tourists. Would you like to share your experience with us here? OR do you prefer me to email you via photo.net, please? Thank you. Joe

  3. Thank you, everybody. Keeping search over the internet has just come up with some interesting comments on the

pros and cons of gimbal heads (wimberley vers mongoose action head), esp those made by Art Morris as per link

    http://www.nikonians.org/forums/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=159&topic_id=22713&mesg_id=22713&page=

There are also good discussions from some of the users in

    http://www.nikonians.org/forums/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=159&topic_id=23591&mesg_id=23591&page=

I've just posted here for anybody who is interested. Any further comments are most welcome.

  4. I'd like to get a lightweight tripod head for my recently acquired Canon EF 500/4.5 L USM (weighing 6.6 lbs) for

traveling overseas for shooting wildlife. What I now have in mind is one of the 4th Generation Design Action

    Heads, M-2.3, M3.5, or M3.5a, as per links (http://www.4gdphoto.com/, http://www.birdsasart.com/mongoose.htm). I have

searched the internet and photo.net; but been unable to find any users feedback on their products. Would anybody

out here offer their experience and insight, please? Any other comments are also welcome.

  5. I think I'm dumb. I've read thr' this post twice, incl all the links, but still failed to make out if the high end expensive

UDMA cards, such as Sandisk 45mb/sec or Transcend 300x, would be an overkill for my 50D soon to arrive. Would

anybody please enlighten me? I'd like to shoot with the fast continuous mode for sports, wildlife, etc. I gather there

are quite a number of factors, eg, the write speeds of the card & camera (50D), buffer, etc.

  6. I'd like to buy a lightweight 500mm for my canon 1.6 crop camera for wildlife. The canon 400/4.5 ceased production

about 8 years ago and the used ones are not easy to find (and also parts may not be available for servicing). I'm now

seriously considering Sigma 500/4.5. I was wondering if any body who owns or uses this lens would advise how it

performs and, in particular, when fitted with a 1.4x tc. Thank you.

  7. I'd like to buy this lens (used) for use with my canon 1.6 crop factor camera for wildlife. I'm aware that I may not be

able to get parts for servicing in the unlikely event of a breakdown. I have been to eBay, KEH and B&H. The one at

eBay is too expensive at $4,490 and there is none from the other stores. I was wondering if you would advise where I

should look for this lens. Moreover, can any body tell me how Sigma 500/4.5 performs and if it can be used with a

    1.4 tc? Thanks.

  8. Thank you all for your valuable input. However, I'd like to know exactly what Shun has asked earlier as follows:

"Does anybody have more recent experience at Churchill, like in the last 2, 3 years? I heard that polar bear viewing and photography there has not been as good of late."

In particular, has anybody ever joined the polar bear adventure photography tour organized by the Alaska Hallo Bay Bear Camp (www.hallobay.com). If so, please let us know of your feedback. Thanks.

  9. My friend and I are planning a trip next year to Churchill. We have recently

come across a polar bear adventure photography tour organized by the Alaska

Hallo Bay Bear Camp (www.hallobay.com). Does any body have any first hand

    information, please?

  10. Hi, Carl

    Many thanks for your advice.

In fact, upon advice of this forum, I had sent an email to Katmai Office more or less along your lines; and I received a favorable reply from Roy Wood of nps.gov as follows:

"Hello K C: I am sorry you have had problems with the new campground reservationsystem. We have dealt with a number of issues stemming from the fact that this is a new system. Today we spoke with representatives of the reservation provider and they will be contacting you shortly to let you know that they have reinstated your last day at Brooks Camp. As per your original reservation, you will be able to stay for the nights of July 7-13 (checking out by 11:00 am on the14th) in the Brooks Camp Campground. Would you please print a copy of this email and bring it with you to BrooksCamp along with your other confirmation papers? I know it is an extrahassle to do so, but it may serve as clarification for the folks at Brookswhen you arrive in July. Again, I am sorry you had this problem. See you in July. Sincerely, RoyRoy WoodChief of InterpretationKatmai National Park and PreserveAniakchak National Monument and PreserveAlagnak Wild River (907) 246-2122(907) 246-2116 fax"

    Thank you all.
