  1. Sad, sad commentary on some folks who apparently view public lands as their own domain. It surely will make it harder on the rest of us. Of course I'm convinced Mr. Fatali made a nice profit on his workshops and images using areas that cost him nothing to access.
  2. Just moving in to the 4X5 world and I'm as bit confused on the use of filters such as polarizers, ND's, ect. - in the 35mm world your screw these babies on the front for circular polarizers, add an attachment to the front on ND's - welll, you understand. In the 4X5 world do all filters go BEHIND the lens like a gel? or..how???? Can anyone direct me to a tutorial or site? Thanks.
  3. I have the 400f3.5 along with the2X converter which I use on my F4s. It's a truly awesome MANUAL focus lens. If you can handle the limitations of a manual focus and loss of some of the f4s metering features it's very sharp. I've used it on whitetail deer, black bear, turkey, hummingbirds, bison, elk, what ever and usually shoot aperture priority with no problem.
  4. I'm self printing Nature photo note cards as companion to my gallery

prints. I need a supplier for the boxes that hold 10 cards and 10

envelopes with the clear plastic top. Card size is an 8.5 X 11

folded to 8.5 X 5.5. I don't remember the dimensions of the boxes

    offered by Photographer's Edge.

  5. Just a quick story - I was shooting in the Cove early last Nov and came across about 75 folks watching a mama bear and three cubs eating walnuts. The crowd got closer and closer. A true "naturalist" decided to help Mama get walnuts so he started throwing them to/at her. He hit her..she growled and took 3 giant lunges towards him. Without looking back he ran 300 yards in 9 seconds flat, jumped in his truck and took off at full speed. I think he's still heading south. I also think he left behind his family. The next day at a motel in Gatlinburg I saw another mama and two cubs climb into the back of an open panel van at the motel and emerge with a McDonalds sack.

So - the concensus is to: 1: talk to the rangers, 2: hike/bike in before sunrise to set up, 3: get lucky? Anyone have any problems with local rangers in the area and "professional" Photogs (as defined by gear, not talent)? Thanks again.

  6. I've booked three weekdays the third week of October in the Cades

Cove campground with the express purpose of photographing Black

Bears. I'm hoping (naively) that by having access as soon as the

gate opens at sunrise I'll miss most of the car tourist and can

search the area early. Any suggestions to increase my success? Am I

on a fool's errand. As always - thanks. And yes, I'll be

    carefull....I'm using a 400mm Nikon f3.5 and a 2X if necessary.

  7. I'm spending next week in Palm Springs and will have time for some

serious shooting. What's the wildflower situation in Josua Tree and

locations surrounding Plam Springs? Any other nice nature locations

in the vicinity? As always, thanks.

  8. I agree with Curt on both points. However, I've personally found Reelfoot pretty hard to shoot - you have to cover a lot of ground to get more than one location. This is probably just me and someone else will, I'm sure, have some favorite locations. You're probably too late to shoot the Bald eagles there.

I've never shoot the zoo in Memphis and have wondered how photographer friendly the location is myself. I'd be interested in hearing more about that myself.

    Have fun.

  9. Call the Wildwood Lodge just outside of the Pickett State Park portion of the Big South Fork, ask for Julia. She's one of the owners of this UNIQUE Bed and Breakfast and a wildflower enthusiast. 931-879-9453. Also a nice place to stay. Additionally, for those interested there is a movement afoot to open some of the area over to recreational ATV's - for more information on this check www.npca.org (National Parks and Conservation Association).
  10. I'll be in Palm Springs the first week of May. Josua Tree is

definitely on the "to do" list. Any other locations in reasonable

driving distance that I can visit before/after daily meetings? Will

I have missed wildflower opportunities? I'll be shooting 4X5 and

35mm. Any suggestions would be appreciated. As always - Thanks.
