  1. laura,

I love my 50 1.4 but I was really struggleing to get a sharp upclose portrait. I wanted to shoot wide open, have the eyes in sharp focus and to use available light. With the very shallow DOF I was finding my own movement, forget about the subject's movement, was enough to take the eyes out of focus.

I started bracketing my focus and this has helped produced a higher rate of keepers.

Two ways I do this. First and easiest is to just fire off a group of shots in continuous mode. This way as I move, sway or whatever you want to call it, I get at least one shot in sharp focus.

The other way is to slowly manual focus through the desired focus point while again take a burst of continuous shots.

    An Example:

  2. I have the 50mm 1.7 in AF. Great lens, so you have a good start.

I'll only comment on the lenses I have or have had. I know there are lots of other very good options out there. Search the various forums.

Wide Angle: Look for a 28mm f3.5, not the 2.8. This lens was suggested to me by a couple of people. It is incredible. Sharpness, contrast and color are all excellent. Ebay for less than $150.

I also have the 40mm "Pancake" f2.8. Also a very good lens, but with the 28mm and 50mm, I don't find myself using it much.

If you decide you want something a little longer, I have 2 105mm leneses. The Vivitar f2.5 Series One Macro lives up to it's quality reputation. I am very pleased with this lens. However, my second 105mm tops all others. I was given a Pentax(K)105mm f2.8. This is a little harder to find than the others I have mentioned, but well worth the hunt. Small in size and weight, huge in performance. My best lens.

    Hope this helps.

    John

  3. Those prices seem high. Perhaps it is the difference a month makes...

I paid $69 (EBay) for the lens with original sun shade and cases for both.

Now that I've had it for a while and seen the results it is capable of, I'd have paid three times as much.

  4. This is a photo of fungus on a Pentax 50mm lens. Using only a small phillips screwdriver I was able to disassemble the lens enough to access the affected lens and clean it. Prior to doing this I left the lens in direct sunlight for a week. I had read that the UV from the sun kills the fungus. This seemed to be the case. After one week of sunny days the fungus had turned lighter in color and was of a powdery consistancy that could be brush off the lens.
