I posted a similar thing a little while back. The end result is i am still very happy with my setup but there are those that have definitely had issues.
Within those 2 are links to other places for more opinions on the subject and for checking properly if there is an issue, also for fixes (like reseting the system, micro adjusting for a lens and conducting proper tests). You issue may be unrelated and due to factors other kind folks have mentioned, but if you still have some issues those links may be worth a whirl.

  2.
I started off with a eos 300d, went to a 30d and then on to a 7d and still have them all. My 3 year old has been photographed since day 1 and loves to help me take photos. so a little while ago I gave her the 300d and she uses it when she pleases, but mustn't run with it and wear the strap. it has taken a few dings, but as i don't care if it dies I don't mind. If it does get destroyed i'll be lookin for old and 2nd hand - the optics and functions really don't matter at this stage (I'm just hoping it generates a lasting interest)

  4.
i didnt get into photography until late and the digital age was in full swing. so i went back to film after a time out of interest from seeing lovely black and whites (the cameras i could afford at the time weren't very good; compared with now). I was also interested in the whole darkroom side of things as i really knew nothing about it - so did a course or 2. Once i learned about the processes it was also easier/quicker/cheaper for me to stick with it.
I have run some colour through the camera but only because i got some colour films for free. When i buy it i go for b&w and the colour is left to the digital. i just enjoy it that way round

  5.
I can't comment on the 600 but I use the Epson Perfection V750 pro. my old man is scanning boxes and boxes of colour negs and i do b&w negs cos I want to get them online.
Very happy with the results, although i don't use the best holder (can buy seperate) and i get some softness cos the neg curls a little, but until i get around to wanting to print one up properly for the wall i am happy enough.

The software is good and has a lot of features and i didn't find it too taxing (used 2 different sorts - one more advanced than the other and got good results with both: haven't got access to their names atm).
The only problem i had was the time it took as i had a low end pc, and i couldn't use the multi scan function to get better results as i would run out of memory.
I enjoyed using it over all.

  7.
I got one last year and I'm really happy with it. i recommended it to a mate at work and he had some issues with AF and out of focus issues and has returned it to canon to see if they can make it work. looking into the problem since shows that it would appear it is not an isolated occurrence.
the opinion on what the problem actually is and how it manifests is very devided. after doing my own tests I still think it is the nuts and recommend it for sure, but my advice would be to try it out before you buy it to avoid any disappointment.
8.
Hiya. thanks all for the feedback. It wasn't the aperture doing it (even though I like taking most of my shots wide open, cos I like the effect) or the front/back calibrations, my test was manual focus using live view, then mirror lock and cable release on a tripod at f/8 (heh, i'd done a fair amount of trolling sites by that time).
I had done a few tests after my initial searches and things did indeed seem to be soft right at the focal point, or at least softer than the sort of shots given up on these kind of sites (used to try and get an idea of what 100% should look like):
http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=799284
I haven't seen the shots my mate took either so I don't know if it was the glass he was using, how he was shooting, his testing, his expectations or whatever. Don't get me wrong - I'm still happy with what i get from my 7d for what i use it for at the moment. I just wanted to try and understand the issue (more to the point work out if I even had an issue) before the kids get a bit older and I can get out and about again and all of a sudden run up against a problem when i could have been spending the time before hand correcting it.
I think I have sorted things out in my head that I am still a happy camper even at 100% on this camera. My final test on the matter is shown:
http://www.photo.net/photo/12944156 - *edit* that shot is 100% crop of the RAW with no sharpening or any other tweaks.

Thanks for helping me reach the conclusion.

  9.
Hi, I bought a 7d mid last year and have been very happy with it. recent new arrivals meant no time for going out taking photos but lots of time indoors capturing fast moving littluns in low light - so i was very happy with the way the ISO worked with it all.
I recommended the unit to a work mate along with links to reviews i had gone through before buying one. He got it and from the word go had nothing but trouble with the usual contenders of AF and OOF.
Started looking into the issue and seems like everyone on the web knew about it but me - or at least half knew about it and the other half denied it existed and everyone thought the other half were incompetent or bastards.
Due to the snap shots i was taking i had no reason to run them up to 100%, minimising mainly for emailing en mass to the rest of the family.
Any softness i attributed to the user def presets and high IOS, and didn't mind.
Now I've started looking I'm spotting OOF. No AF issues but the OOF is, i think, present. Trouble is, there is so much out there I don't know how sharp a 100% crop is meant to be - does anyone have a link to something unbiased against which to judge. ..and if it is with a 15-85mm or a 60mm ef-s then all the better.
And one thing nobody seems to mention is - is the OOF fixable? Has anyone had the problem and got rid of it?
Not too interested in the pros and cons of the manafacturer just in a way forward if there is one. Thanks for your time.

  10.
i couldnt afford one of the 9000s so i went for a flatbed epsom v750 pro - does 35mm and medium. very happy with the results. i find it a little slow cos my PC is rubbish and i cant do the multi scan (same reason) but i've lugged it round to a mate's with a decent pc and it works fine. results on mine are nice, but you have to invest in a better holder than comes packaged - i haven't as yet, but will definately do.

  11.
I suppose it ain't the time to point out what you're probably meant to be doing at work...? heh ;-)
IT depts are usually quite approachable. If your internet policy says you can use the net for personal use during breaks, etc, whilst there then log a job and tell them why it should be allowed. Probably take 5 days as it wont be a priority but, unless you got some guy having a bad day or you've previously been a bit of a numpty towards them, it takes no time at all to let it back through and it'll be ok'd.

  12.
Hi, I wasn't going to respond initally as there was fair comment all round, but I would like to query a small snippet of the post (and I understand there is lack of intended tone in forum posts, so just to be clear this isn't being 'uppity'):
"....You did a service for yourself, for your country and for us others who photograph on the street. I do not necessarily endorse what you did, but I cannot fault your choice, under the circumstances, and they do benefit us all...."
I'm just curious as to what service was provided here, particularly for the country, and what benefit was brought to us all; indeed anybody by those actions.
I'm know there are many examples of personal/small/silent protests and see the value/necessity. but in this instance I don't see the good this kind of action can bring to resolve the overall problem, especially given the nature of the current cause.

  13.
I'm not sure why you would think he isn't. It's a fair comment isn't it? it ain't just aljiwotwot that blows stuff up. IRA is back on the home grown action; works wonders for making officials try to stay on the ball. so while it probably ain't the likely target for some boom boom action, you can't rule it out.

For some reason couldn't get past 4m56s so might get shot down by the content after that point, but ah well, I wanted to say something on it anyway..

I'd say the suspicious behaviour was in not giving any details when asked nicely in a non-confrontational way to provide them so that he could be checked against known records of naughty folk so that everybody could go about their day.

Fair enough not obliged.

And ok the 2nd officer came across as a bit of a muppet , but most likely was just trying a delaying action so that people behind the scenes could run around and track movements etc rather than lose a 'potential' suspect(?).

But you certainly ain't looking guilt free anymore mate; what you hiding?

No it ain't ideal, but the world has changed aye.

So, if they didn't ask the questions and something had happened, what then? That would have been a number of people having their job on the line during a review of the incident - did they follow protocol, did they do enough, oh my goodness what could be done to prevent it happening again! oh and now the media is involved. why oh why did they not just arrest the man right then They had him? oh my little jimmy would still be here now!

eeek .

Unlucky, they're going to give you a bad day everytime and deal with one irate photographer than a load of angry relatives wanting to know what went wrong... bit sad but true. And after all they do have a responsibility to everyone else in that town centre.
If anyone has the answer on who should be left alone and who should be confronted then I'm sure they'd be only to happy to listen, yeah?

It ain't great, but it is the world we live in these days. Don't be surprised at getting such a reaction if you are going to be needlessly obstinent - they didn't say stop taking shots, and they didn't know the last shots taken were of santa . No it ain't a crime in itself but surely a bit of give and take? That guy just knew the laws and seems to be flaunting the situation to make a point.

It may seem like a slow decent into a big brother's world, but this ain't about a fascist state, etc, its about covering arses. Perhaps working together with the rozzas will help mitigate some of the problems. If every time they ask the question they get such a problem and waste so much time then it is surely going to be easier to just heavy hand the situation. Bound to just cause bad feeling on both sides and it is much easier to arrest the one guy just so they can get on with their real work. Everybody quick, you know your rights - cut that nose! spite that face!

now that guy who was arrested for taking pictures of his son on a train; well that annoys me, so it ain't all cut and dry -- and yes I realise this subject has a billion facets and not all are the same and even this one can't be pigeon holed quite so tritely as I've put it, but I don't feel being pissy , which this guy blatantly was, deserves any applause.

  14.
i started off in digital and went up the canon route and enjoy it a lot. Got various flavours of PS and have Gigs of shots. I then picked up an old canon film slr and shot a roll. the difference was great - i got into a darkroom course, bought a hasselblad 500 CM, have just bought a scanner (epson v750 pro) and am starting to go back the other way so i can archive and share my shots and do my darkroom stuff at home when i haven't got the time to get there or it is booked out.
I now take the 4 cameras out with me most of the time: my dslr for most shots, my slr, my hassey and a cheapy holga for yet another flavour. They all fit nicely in a bag, and I'm not inconvenienced luggging them about. I found the film great for giving me more appreciation and slowing the process down to make me think a bit more rather than just taking 30 shots and hoping for a good one.
Not much of a point so far, so here it is... I just enjoy it. It has nothing to do with ease or quality or workflows or clinging to the past. One day it may well all be gone with no films, papers or chemicals for me to waste my money on, but I see no reason I should help encourage that day to arrive.
It's your interest mate, go shoot the film.

In answer to your initial question - if I don't get a chance to develope the film myself then i usually get a lowres CD but I always get some small prints cos I like handling them and flicking through them and they are so shiny. I then whack them all on to computer myself.

  15. I'm thinking of purchasing a HASSELBLAD 501CM BODY WITH 80MM F2.8 CB PLANAR LENS

& A12 MAGAZINE from a local dealer. Its in good condition and the company is a

reputable one and the price is so nice, this just seems like the perfect time to

get it, but.... he has doubts, yes he does.

Does anyone have any experience of these? I've heard tell that sometimes the

film doesn't lie flat in the back. I'll do the usual test when I go see it, like

flicking through each shutter speed and aperture etc and shoot a roll of on it,

but are there any other things to look out for?

I've read reviews and comparisons between Rolleis and Pentax etc and it

undoubtedly gives a good image and is a sturdy bit of kit, but any advice from

    anyone would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks. Rob

  16. from reading a magazine a while back there was an article from one of the pros saying how they hated when requested to give the RAW files when comissioned as they weren't then submitting the finished product as they wished it to be seen.

So I suppose that is something to concider - if you aren't asked for the RAW make sure you have a high quality TIFF or such like and send in the picture 'you' want published.

  17. thats not really an answer, I'm not here to debate the joys of the rating system, but to answer - I would rate exactly the same, I just don't want there to be a reason for people to come back and rate me highly because I have enjoyed their picture.

I critique as much as I rate, but at times I want to just trawl the site. But the negative side of it that you hinted at answers the question of why I can't find an option to do so.

  18. I've been trying to find a way of rating photos, that I find whilst browsing,

    anonymously.

If you click into a photo you get the rate option but it leaves your name and

the only way I've been able to find is to catch a photo on the 'rate photos'

section. This is all well and good if it is a recent entry, but what about one

that is a month/year etc old.

Is there a way around this? cheers, Rob
