I have been playing around with the AF ON button on my D200 and am new to
professional level cameras (my last was the D70). What auto focus settings
suit you best when taking pictures of moving people (candids) in poor lighting?
My camera doesn't want to focus no matter what I do at times. By poor
lighting I mean dusk or indoor. There are so many settings with the D200 that
I'm confused at which one would be best. I like the AF ON button because once
I get my subject in focus I can move them off center and it won't refocus the
camera. I like having that flexibility it seems like all the other settings I
try...as soon as I move the subject in the frame the camera refocuses. But I
don't like the button because its a little awkward for me to reach seeing that
I have small hands.
HELP? Thanks for any tips and advice you can give me.

thanks...can you explain why the lighting table is better than the flexible backgrounds?

We have a need to shoot products. Everything from t-shirts to books. Most
are smaller items but size will vary. Have little to zero experience setting
up studio lighting Here are my questions:
1. Is flash necessary or advantageous to use. If we had flash units can we
use the mono light feature and not have them flash to get a better effect?
2. Is a box necessary or can you acheive the same results with better
flexibility by using a softbox and reflector(s).
3. If a box is not used what is the best material to use for the
floor/background. Something that can curved up and not have any sheen.
4. I have been looking at White Lightning for a brand. So many people rave
about them. Is there any advantage for product shooting with another brand?
We would like a permanent set up so whenever we need to shoot product its
there and for the most part ready to do.
Any other issues I haven't thought of please let me know what your
advice...and I will give you more info.
I APPRECIATE THE HELP....ALOT!

K a big issue for me. I shoot almost exclusively in RAW and just upgraded from a D70 to D200 to find out with all the hoopla over both CS2, Bridge and D200 capabilities...these great tools are somewhat incompatible? I am a little irked to say the least as I love the flexibility that RAW images give me. I read there is a plug in but it is uncertain whether the sofware that came with my new camera will be give it to me and likewise I'm reading that the capability of the plugin when I get it is less quality than the current totally cool interface I currently use that came with CS2?
Anybody have a great solution to this problem?

I have my Nikon D70 and my D200 side by side...(D200 just got today). I
connect the CF card to my computer and go to view the images I just shot.
Both cameras took RAW NEF images. The D70's open right up but the images off
the D200 won't open. It says "could not compelete because it was not the
right kind of document".
I am pulling my hair out why this would happen.
Any tips?

I just did a retirement party and they want a really nice album for the
pictures. I only need one and I have never done this before. These people
are wealthy and want quality. I have no idea where to start...
what is the best album out there - that will allow me to buy only one?
Do I need to buy anything other than the album to make it work?
What would an album of 50 pictures run? What is the going rate on something
like that?
Thanks for the help!

This is a good start. I will try. I also thought it may be that it was taking so long to load because my computer would start running the screensaver...so I made it 3 hours before the screen saver would kick in to hopefully stop that from messing it up. I thought it was weird that it quits (or seems to) in the same place each time (the help files). Thanks again and I will try your recommendations.

I have just bought photoshop CS2 (original Adobe install disk) I have a brand
new Dell computer that is plenty fast and has ample storage. When I try to
install Photoshop it seems to be getting hung up at the end of the process as
it installs the help features. I let it go for HOURS and it just kept
saying...this make take several minutes. The little green line kept moving
back and forth but for 3-4 hours it was as if it ware stuck in that mode.
So I CNTRL/ALT/DELETED out of it and uninstalled it and tried again and the
same thing keeps happening. I installed the program on my laptop already with
no problems... so I'm perplexed. Anyone have a similar problem or know a fix?

I use my SB800 quite often and have rechargable double A's. But
even at that...I am wishing for a better solution. Why is it that
our camera bodies have long lasting batteries but the flash still
uses AA's?
I get tired of recharging them and making sure I have enough just in
case. There is no warning when they start deteriorating...I'd love
a low battery warning as well.
Anybody else have these issues?

Thanks everyone. You've given me food for thought. Since I'm just starting out it looks like I'd do better getting by for the time being and try to find studio space to rent when i know I can support it. I don't have enough work yet to even consider it as a possibility. Anyone ever use a storage facility? I've heard of people using that for band rehearsals?
Its so exciting having people ask me if I can do their portraits and getting referrals from people but its daunting to consider all the options with no experience. SO THANKS AGAIN!

if 30x30 and 14 ft ceilings is ideal....what is the smallest acceptable? I was contemplating a 12x20 with 7ft ceiling that pitches up to 11ft.?

I need a studio and am planning on purchasing studio lighting. I
have already had requests for family portraits, pregnancy portraits
etc. So I'm trying to plan out how much space I need. I can build
a studio out in my backyard but what are the ideal dimensions? What
is the lowest acceptable ceiling height? I am somewhat limited on
space...what is the smallest acceptable studio?
I know it will depend on the size of the groups I shoot...I expect
there to be 4 people max and mostly one or two people only. I am
also looking at a four light setup with key, fill, hair light and
background light. THANKS for the help!

OKAY! SUCCESSSSSSS I got it to work after reading that article. THANK YOU THANK YOU! And yes a subscription to photo.net is great. I'm taking a photography class and I have to say I'm getting more out of you all than I am the class. I'm going to defintely give to this site. KUDOS all and thank you!

i had my sensor cleaned for about $75. It is more expensive to buy the equipment and do it yourself. If you tackle it on your own be sure to read your manual. You don't want to mess it up.

okay hold on...I found channel 3 and selected A...saw that it was on a different menu but its still not working. I'm going to keep playing with it but any tips are welcome. thanks again

K - I need more help. I did all the settings...put the camera in commander mode, selected remote on the flash, but then when I went to set the flash on A channel three...that option didn't exist. Once I set the flash to remote the A/AA option was a blank box. I tried it anyway and it didn't work to set off the flash. Hmm..I need to find the manual...any tips?
-
that is so cool...I'm gonna try it tonight. This site has been invaluable to me...there should be a subscription charge. I'm learning more here than the photography class I'm taking.
thanks guys

I'm new at this folks. I have a Nikon D70 and the speedlight. I
use the flash quite often bouncing the light to the ceiling or walls
with a diffuser cap (opaque white cover) but I've been reading the
forums and sometimes people place their speedlight off the
camera...how do I get the flash to sync with the camera? Do I need
an attachment? Sorry, this is probably a dumb questions.
thanks for your patience with someone who knows little.

when you say softbox...does that mean strobe or continuous light?
-
Corrie people like are grateful to people like you. I don't know anything either and have learned a great deal from your post.
Thanks!

ah yes...a newbie no longer :)
-
Hey Clayton, what is your website...I would like to contact you and get that list and see your work!
thanks for the input. It was very valuable to me.
-
I keep learning! And I can't tell you how valuable this is to me. Keep the comments coming! I am excited to rent a set of lights so I can practice and I just got a job to shoot engagement photos! WOOHOO...I'm so ready to start doing this for real!
If I can afford it...should I but the deluxe studio set up or keep it simple with just three lights? Is there an advantage to having it all at one time...even if I'm a beginner?
-
Thanks eveybody for your responses. I have no technical experience with lights whatsoever so I don't know what is important to me and what isn't at this point. That is what scares me the most. But I'm so ready to learn!!! I'm so excited to get started.
