Thank you so much all of you who have volunteered replies. I took the camera to London's Fixation (approved Nikon) who confirmed it is the coupling ring that is damaged. To fix it, service the camera and clean the sensor is £150 which I'm pretty ok with.
I really appreciate your help and diagnosis

Michael- thank you--I shall be off to Fixation in the morning for a proper repair...I really appreciate your help here.

Update:
Thanks very much to all of you who have replied. I have narrowed the problem down to the small lever that Michael,CPM & Kari have identified as the issue. Indeed it is not moving as freely as it should....question is then- it's moving up but not back i.e. it goes from 1.2 upwards but won't click back as aperture widens. It's almost as if it needs a little lubricant to make it swing back....probably don't go there and leave it to the experts I think but thought I'd ask...

Hi
Thanks for reading...my wonderful 50 1.2 has suddenly decided not to communicate with my D700. It's all set-up under the correct manual lens detail and has always behaved when operating the manual aperture changes (even on the unmarked 1.4 click).
It's suddenly not responding and registering all sorts of silly apertures on the camera whilst the lens clicks through from 1.2 onwards..it seems perhaps an issue with the contacts that convey information to the camera..everything looks very clean on the lens mount and my 50 1.4 (yes I know why would anyone sane need both...NAS) registers perfectly.
Appreciate any ideas from the vast knowledge-base that is Photo.net. My local repair place is the wonderful Fixation in London but I thought I'd be cheeky and try for some free advice first!
Thanks- Simon

Check the colour picker boxes (on the toolbar, the little black/white boxes 2/3rds down) are switched to black (foreground) and white (background).
That normally fixes it.

Hi
Thanks for reading-- I really should know the answer to this- I've trawled the Forums and couldn't find a similar thread....so I appreciate your help!
Inspired by the link that Shun posted 'Fast track to Wireless Speedlights' (thanks Shun)
Using D300 and SB800 remotely, fired by pop-up flash...
Question is around (basics!) --if I want to use Aperture priority to control DoF (typically wide 2.8- 4) then ambient light usually dictates (on a sunny day) a fast shutter speed (say 800th+)
....the max sync speed for the camera is (I think )320th...sooo will the flash have any effect given the camera is shooting at a faster speed than max synch.

I seem to be getting ok results but feel that I'm not controlling the situation as I should.
If I switch to Manual (which seems sensible) I would I guess go 320th but then a more narrow aperture (OK use ND filters but...)....hope this isn't too stupid a question for you learned people out there!

Thanks

Hi
Has anyone experience of recurring smears on the sensor?
I seem to have an issue that when I'm using the camera for an extended period- say in a studio producing 200+ images in a session fairly rapidly- I appear to get a smear (??oil) at the top left of the sensor (in portrait mode ). It seems to be in roughly the same place. I ended up this morning after a shoot of 400 images last night, having the sensor professionally cleaned (in London by Nikon agent Fixation, who did a smashing job).....Arctic Butterfly wouldn't move it ...
Now it may well be my imagination but I do seem to get the same smear in roughly the same place-- could it be oil ''thrown off'' by ?shutter / mirror after repeated action. Seems highly unlikely and I've seen no other posts on this so doubt it's just me!
As ever would appreciate thoughts from the great and good on this.

Best regards, Simon

Hi
Anyone have any comment on using ne of the 3 (1.4 1.7 or 2x) Teleconverrters, particularly wit the 70-200 2.8. I'm
aware that I will lose a stop (or more) dependant upon which one I might choose and I'm balancing the practicality of
using the TC aginst losing light/image quality (possibly?).
I would be grateful if anyone might have an appropriate comment, many thanks.

William- thanks for the advice ! Best Wishes, Simon

Agree with Sergey- Artic Butterfly every time. Used to use swabs but certainly wouldn't now (don't need to ).
Good luck.

Hello Tom. Great pictures- really impressed. Did you use rear curtain sync on the flash- love the movement .

I have bought from Grays over a number of years and would vouch for them 100%. They are truly the very best you will find. Good luck tomorrow.

Hi
Keen to use my D200 tethered to my laptop in my home studio to enable instant
assessment of images as they are shot. Anyone know what software ( use CS2) and
additional cables I might need? Thanks in advanmce, Simon.

Hi
Simple question in need of a simple answer- when I upload RAW files (NEF from
Nikon D200) I can't view the thumnail in Bridge...used to open automatically
now I just get the NEF logo and I have to bulk open in CS2 and save as TIFF
everytime.
I'm sure there's something simple I can do...but I dont know what.
Thanks in anticipation- Simon

Thanks Edward - worked first time-appreciate your response, Simon

Hi. Hopefully a really simple question but one where I just cannot seem to find
an answer to !
I have recently re-installed CS2 on my laptop and find that when I want to open
a file from Bridge the only option I have is to open it in Internet Explorer
(which is indicated as the default) or Paint 5.1. To open a file in PS2 I
therefore have to use the 'Open' command and open the whole folder then select
the file....which is taking ages! I cannot find a way of changing the default
to PS2.....Can anyone out there shed some light on this for me? Would be very
appreciative.

Pentacon 135 15-blade - Bayonet?
in Classic Manual Film Cameras

Hi
This may seem like a fairly silly question but I hope someone knowledgable might be able to help. I recently purchased a Pentacon 135 2.8 (15 blade) seems in vgc....I bought a M42 to Nikon adaptor so I can use it on my DSLR...thing is that the lens seems to have a small bayonet rather than a screw fit which means the standard M42 adaptor won't fit.
Have I maybe missed something here..perhaps someone can put me right.
Thanks for reading.
