This one definitely needs to be examined in a larger format. Very nice - thanks for sharing.

Mark, bear in mind that I shoot almost exclusively with fixed focal length (and really old) lenses, so my experience with zoom type lenses is limited. You obviously had the problem that the other trees and branches were very close to your subject, so you would have had to step up to an f2 or wider to blur them out. The lighting situation, and the limitations of your lens, might have made that impossible.
I believe that backing up and using a longer focal length might have helped some, but if f4.5 was close to the maximum apeture of your lens, it would not have helped much. I think you probably did about as well as you could have in the circumstances, unless you use some post-processing Photoshop tricks. I can't help you much with those - I'm a film/analog kind of guy.
Anyway, good effort, and keep it up. I look forward to seeing more of your photos in the future.

Mark, it's not a bad photo. My only comment is that your subject (the rotten tree trunk) tends to blend in with the other trees a little too much. I'd suggest with this subject either a shallower depth of field when you shoot the image, or more selective cropping.
