I switched and have loved my 5D ever since. I can confirm the shorter battery run time, I have the suspicion that especially in standby (when I yet again forgot to power off completely) the 5D dwells on some electronic thoughts and the next day the battery is low.
If you have any analog full frame history, you are going to feel back home with the 5D.

Dear Travis,
when you have never worked with a cropped sensor, you will find adapting to the focal
length conversion factor very unintuitive. And once you get settled in the 1.6x world, you
will start to spend money on EF-S lenses that are in my opinion overpriced (sometimes in
the "L" price range). So after a while you will have spent the same amount of money and
the move back to the full frame sensor world will be economically painful.
I strongly recommend to use a 5D and 40D side by side before making your decision.
For me the full frame and bright viewfinder alone are worth the extra money for the 5D
body. And you can get many lenses for a decent price (e.g. 50mm/1.4 or even 50mm/1.8)
and take great pictures.

Hey Jon,
you can count me in among the people who miss ECF. That would make us three.
Seriously, time is so valuable behind the camera. I would give a lot to be able to control the
focus without fumbling with my degenerated fingers. And I have read a huge flame on the
"Focus and Recompose Dance" in this very forum...

When you bring back the equipment yourself and you have already used in while in the US,
it can no longer be considered "new" by customs.
Anyway, when I get back to Europe from the U.S. it is typically early morning and usually
there is no one from customs to be seen.
And regarding warranty, I have saved so much money by buying from B&H, I could easily
afford a ticket to NYC to get warranty "headaches" resolved.

Dear Mike,
I've been to Kitakyushu (just north of Fukuoka) recently and I was quite disappointed by
the pricing of Canon equipment in one of the larger electronic stores. B&H was at that time
well 40% below the Japanese pricing. Funny, since Canon actually has a production plant in
Oita on Kyushu Island.
From Wikipedia I have following clip regarding Fukuoka:

In case you are into cameras, computers or other electronics, you can find a huge
Yodobashi Camera store right outside of Hakata station. Go out to the eastern side of the
JR station (Chikushi Gate). You will find it in the second block on the right hand side.

Good luck,

I had an "ERR" using my 50mm/1.4 on a 5D showing up after years of troublefree shooting of this lens on different bodies.
The Number shown in the aperture was "0" and it didn't fire.
I did some conjuration at midnight and full moon, spoke to the lens, danced around it and now it works again.
Well, honestly I just cleaned the connectors with some Q-Tips and Alcohol.

Dear Abe,
I am absolutely happy with the sensor swabs that copperhill images is offering. Please read:
http://www.pbase.com/copperhill/ccd_cleaning
You get used to swabbing real fast and it provides in my opinion the best results without ripping you off financially.

Regarding the MacOS X Versions some clarification:
The Canon Utility "EOS Viewer Utilities" is not capable of downloading pictures directly
from the 20D when running MacOS X 10.4. This was however possible until MacOS X
10.3.9.
Canon for some reason doesn't bother to update its software for more than six months
now.
The card reader is a good solution as long as you have a f*ing card reader with you.
Without one you become desperate.
Happy shooting,
Stephan

Dear Kim, sounds as if your monitor settings are strange.
Three important things to consider: resolution, color space and monitor calibration.
First of all, open the System Settings->Monitors and select a resolution that your monitor will support natively.
I assume you have some LCD type Display?! And then make sure, that you have selected "millions of colors".
Second, read about Colorspaces and check how the information contained in your image files will be handled. Some
basic information (actually regarding browsers) can be found here:
http://www.gballard.net/psd/go_live_page_profile/embeddedJPEGprofiles.html#
And believe me, you will want to calibrate your monitor! Use a colorimeter, maybe you can borrow one since you
will need it only for a couple of minutes every other month or so. This will make all the colors come "true".
Best regards, Stephan
