okay guys... im royally pissed right now. we'll see how much more pissed i get once the stuff comes in the mail.

 

i called sigma and they know nothing about the "slg".

 

then i called abes and told them that sigma said that and they gave me some BS answer to try and cover it up... like maybe it came from a different distributer or some crap like that.. im just going to check out the lens once i get it and do a few tests and most likely send it back if im not totally satisfied with it..... hm, but i dont even know how will i know its a POS or not.

 

oh, and i didnt pay anything extra, they just offered to swap out the lenses.

 

but f*** it. im going to send it back whether it says slg on the barrel or not. ill just ask for my money back and leave it at that... then go to a local place that i should have bought from even thought it may be more expensive.

i found out the difference between the slg and the dc. ah crap, i forgot what rating she said each one was. i think it was that the slg has a d rating and the dc has a g... i might already have it mixed up.

 

basically she said that its the type of material and coating they use for the glass in the slg version. also, the slg has macro capability while the dc does not. AND, the slg has a metal mount while the dc does not.

i agree that this "bait and switch" thing is under speculation here. but its not the topic at hand. now that it is, wouldnt you guys agree that a company is in business to make money? and wouldnt that include pushing and selling products that earn them the most revenue even if that means suggesting it after a person has mad their decision? i mean, when it comes down to it, the buyer is the one that makes the final decision. and in this case, me.

 

i may have been a little ahead of myself by agreeing and not doing the proper research. but why should i not listen and believe what the sales representative is telling me? again, in this case, the sg18125 being a better performer than the nikkor 1870.

 

 

 

and the thing with the lens im getitng, i havent found much more info on it. sigma makes two versions of this lens, a dc and slg. im getting the slg which is twice as expensive as the dc and a hundred more than the nikkor. i havent found much info on the slg.... but im willing to try it. after all, it cant be worse than the kit lens or even the nikkor 1870

 

 

when it comes down to it, i just really want my freakin camera so i can start shooting.

wow, did anyone actually stay on topic and talked about the lens rather than how crappy abes of maine is? besides the "shove the POS sigma" comment? so maybe i did fall for it, and yeah, maybe theyre making a little more money. BUT AM I GETTING A NICE LENS? thats all i want to know.... sheesh.

 

oh and about the resale value, i could care less. if i do keep it, that means im satisfied with it and i wont plan on selling it since it ill be one of my only lenses i plan on getting.

 

im not going to be doing any rugged type stuff so it wont see any abuse. as long as the build quality is fine and it holds up over time, ill be happy.... im an amateur and my main areas of focus are automobiles and will venture into portraits and nature.

 

anywho, the order has processed and will be shipping out tomorrow. we'll see whether i like it or not. i can always send it back or sell it on ebay if they try to pull some crap.

 

for those that put some focused comments on this, i thank you. for those that didnt... well, i have nothing to say.

im sure ive read the same thing about companies making more money off of sigma and other brands like that... and yeah i know what youre saying about comparison tests, but i havent really found a place where you can just compare two different lenses. and im not sure how to read those charts either.

again, sorry guys. im just a noob to slr's and lenses and this will be my first. so im sorta anxious and nervous about this. ive done a fair amount of research and thats why i decided on the 18-70 over the d50 kit lens(18-55).

 

and if i get screwed by abes, then i get screwed... but thats not what i came here to ask.
