Hi, A.L.
Jalbum (http://jalbum.net/) has got some pretty good photo galleries, and they are easy to
use. There is also a community using the software who also make new skins.

I use two Sigma lenses, the 105mm macro, and the 70-200mm f/2,8. Both are excellent imo,
and I have had no problems with them. I had a 24-70mm f/2,8, but that one got imprecise in
the focusing, probably coming from poor tightening. I just bought a Canon EG-S 17-55mm
f2,8 IS USM, and I am very happy about that. But it costs more than my long Sigma tele, and I
can't afford to get a Canon 70-200mm f/2,8, even if it might be better than the Sigma.

An interesting point, Angus. I photoshop all my pictures - some more, some less. I try to
be discreet, to give the picture that extra punch that often gets away in the camera, and
not make them into aomething that wasn't there from the start. For instance, RAW is
known to be a bit soft. Is it wrong to bring the sharpness back? And who knows what the
actual scene looked like for me when I took it, two people might percieve colors totally
different. I accept that journalistic pictures shouldn't be tampered with, because of the
demand for authenticity. But when you convert a color picture to b/w, which many
newspapers do, where do you distinguish between art and reality when you give the red
channel a little boost to get more contrast in the converted version?

Sorry, I meant www.photosig.com, ikke photosic (sic!).
-
Linda, try www.photosic.com. There you have to write at least 15 words befoe your critique is
accepted, and you can't rate without critiquing. You also get critique points that allows you to
post more pictures. www.fanartreview.com is a site where I usually get from 10-30 critiques
per picture. Here you earn "member dollars" for each review, and your reviewer rating also
improves when you write more reviews. These two sites have pictures of varying quality -
from very good to mediocre - but I have found that I learn a lot more than here, and I also
learn much more about what to look for in a picture when I am reviewing.
-
I was hoping to get som good advice when I saw the topic here, but I see there is really
not much interest in constructive criticism. I am a member of a couple of other photo
sites, where you are obliged to leave a critique to be allowed to rate, and I learn a lot more
there than I do here. On the other hand, photo.net has got a very nice database solution,
so I use it as my portfolio.
Are noone here really interested in expanding on the "Great", "Good photo", "Excellent", "It
rocks", or just plain nothing, and all the other variations on the typical photo.net critique?
I agree with Michael who likes negative cririques, because that is how we learn to get
better.

I think many of the people here have answered this question for you, Carlos. If you aren't
much interested in post production and don't care to spend time taking your shots to that
extra qulity level, shoot jpg. But if you like to control the output, and find PP interesting, and
also like the joy of seeing hopeless captures turned into acceptable and some times good
pictures, then show RAW. It is as simple as that.

Thanx Alex!
I downloaded the Gutenprint driver, and it works fine. But I have a problem with paper sizes,
it will not print borderless, and I need that. But still this is a workable solution, even if I don't
have the Epson solution right. I am waiting for a response from them.
-
To Marc.
The problem arises with different kinds of paper, and I always correspond what is loaded with
what is chosen in the Print dialogue. I am very thankful for any and all ideas to help me fix
this. My printer driver is v 3.01 - I think that is the Intel version. It seems they haven't
updated the G5 version, it has been 2.17 for ages.
-
Thank you for your tip, Frank.
I had it on USB, but just tried changing taht to FireWire without any success. My problem is
that I don't see a pattern here, and I get so frustrated I sometimes just want to throw the
printer out of the window. When it works it prints beautifully, but I have spent too much time
trying to get it to work.
-
I have posted this question before, but didn't get any good suggestions to how to solve the problem.
When I print from my R1800, I set the correct Printer and paper size in the Page setup dialogue. But when I
try to print, I get an "out of paper" or "paper feed problem" message. If I go back to the Page setup, it has
gone back to "Any printer" and a generic paper size. I have tried every way to get around this, but haven't
found a solution. In some programs (Word, Preview) it works - sometimes, and also in PS, but suddenly I
can't print some documents or picture, without there being any pattern to this.
I have a Mac Pro, 2 x 2,66GHz, 2 GB RAM, MAc OSX v 10.4.8, Firmware 1.1, printer driver v 3.01. I have
had the same problem with this printer on my former PowerMac too.
-
I don't have a solution for you, but if there is any comfort, I have had the same problem on
my r1800. I have tried everything, and what happens is that the paper size and kind I set up
in Page Setup doesn't "stick". I can set the Printer to r1800, paper size to A4, but when I try
to print the file, I see in the dialogue that this has changed to for instance paper roll, and
Printer to "Any printer". A few days ago I updated the printer driver, but when I tried to print
a PS picture today, the same problem arose. I don't understand what kind of problem this is,
but I also would be haappy for any suggestion to how to fix it.

I think the combination of rating and comments give the most meaning. I am also a
member of a Norwegian photo site, foto.no, and here there is no rating. I find that I miss it
there, often people does not bother to comment your picture, and you are in a limbo
about what people really think about it.
I am sometimes bothered by the 3s, other times I feyl they are acccurate, just as I know
that 7s are over the top sometimes. When I rate I try to be as honest as I can, and I never
give low ratings just because I don't like someone or for some other reason outside of the
acttual picture. In my day job I rate music on the radio, and there I always explain what is
behind the rating.
I think Tom Keys' suggestion that rating is only for paying members has much merit. For
those of us who care about the rating, we will hopefully get rid of the abuse ratings. For
those of you who don't care about the rating, you won't be bothered then either.

I don't have an answer for you, but I have experienced similar problems when printing
borderless on the R1800, with the message media not loaded correct. (http://
www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00GptJ)
I suspect a bug in the software, but haven't found anyone who has an answer to this. And
Epson haven't upgraded the driver since March 30th last year. I use a Mac, dual processor G5
with Mac OS 10.4.7.
-
Yes, the problem arises when I choose the printer in the Format for meny. Then I choose the
right paper format and say ok. I have also tried to make the printer the default. After I have
ok-ed the settings, when I open Page Setup again, it is back to Any Printer, and my settings
are "forgotten".
-
I have a recurring problem when printing on my Epson R1800 from my G5 PowerMac with OS X 10.4.6.
My standard paper setting is A4 borderless sheets. In many programs - Preview, Photoshop, Word
(sometimes, not always) - Page Setup will not store this setting, and when I print, the printer obviously
tries to load the paper, but doesn't succeed. The error message is that the printer is out of paper or paper
is loaded wrongly. The strange thing is that when I set the printer setting to A4 (with border), everything
runs smoothly. I have checked Epson's site, but haven't found any answers, neither have I found anything
about bugs in OS X, nor any updates of the printer driver. Does anyone recognize this problem, or is it just
me?

I am using JAlbums on my own site (http://www.artist-pictures.com), and the galleries open
in its own frame. The site was designed by milkandcookies.no, using frames and some flash.
I am also redesigning my wife's website where I will have a JAlbum gallery, but since I don't
want to use frames here, I also can't get it to work. (I have tried to do it with frames, and I
found it not so difficult.) So if anyone has any idea of how to do it without frames, I am also
interested in the answer.

I use the Belkin iPod Media Reader, which is quite expensive, but reads many different
cards. My camera is 350D, and I have one 2 GB and two 1 GB CF cards and shoot only
RAW. I also have the 4th generation 60 GB picture iPod. I would imagine that there should
be no compatibility issues compared to the the Apple iPod Connector. With the Belkin I can
download one card while using another in the camera. The reader is quite slow, and I have
experienced that it has stopped the transfer a couple of times, being quite sensitive to
movement or being touched while transferring. It is also quite bulky, but don't drain the
iPod so much since it uses it's own batteries. Despite the problems I have had - used the
right way, I would recommend it, and it is great for long days at festivals where I can't
bring my laptop.

I think I would wait to buy the new MacBook, or better MacBook Pro until next year. Then
Apple has tuned the OS X, and we have probably got faster laptops too. CS will not be
upgraded to Universal until at the earliest the 1st quarter 2007. I have a 1.67 GHz
PowerBook together with a 2,3 GHz dual processor PowerMac, and they serve me well with
CS2 and all the other software that has still not been upgraded. As a die-hard early
adopter for the last 19 years, I have decided to wait until my critical software is upgraded
this time.
My advise is to buy a second hand PowerBook, 1 GHz or more and get at least 1 or 1,5 GB
RAM. I wouldn't recommend a new PowerBook now. What you loose if you sell the second
hand PB next year is probably not too much, and you will have a machine that still is faster
with PS for a whole year.

Without going into the discussion on good/bad photographer and equipment geeks - should
I upgrade to 30D from my 350D, or should I save the money and rather feed my family?

A3 printer any recommendations

You should check out Epson Stylus Photo R1900. I have owned the R1800, and I was very
satisfied with the result. The 1900 is reported to be even better. If you want to spend more
money, I can recommend the Epson 3800. That's an A2 printer, and it isf antastic for b&w,
and with the typical Epson quality on color.
