  1. While I have not tried any of the third party lenses, I would say the Canon is more than worth it, regardless of the use (wedding, portraits, landscapes, etc.) The Canon 24-70 is my primary lens and I have been extremely happy with it in all situations. I would say if you plan to continue a career in photography I would certainly buy the best out there. Good luck!
  2. Hi Cristy,

I use smugmug and love it. The pro version is about $150. I love being able to upload my pictures after a wedding and then the orders take care of themselves. Not filling my own print orders allows for the time to be spent in other areas. Smugmug does a pretty good job with the printing and I have not had any complaints thus far. They also have a guarantee for their prints so thatメs always nice to mention to a client. Smugmugメs commission is pretty reasonable and with the pro version you can set the prices as you want. They have great support and a great forum with hints, people throwing around ideas, etc. Itメs great. Two cons: They don't offer package prices (yet, they keep saying they are working on it). And the other con I see with smugmug is the customization. I don't know much about it so my site is not quite up to the standard that I would like, but if you are linking to smugmug from another site, their basic layout should be fine. If you are interested, let me know and I can give you my code for a $5 discount. Good luck!

  3. Hello,

I am looking into ordering albums from asukabook.com to offer my clients. For

those of you that offer these albums, I am wondering what you charge clients

for them. You certainly don't have to post it here, but if you could e-mail

me at kimberlynoelphotography@comcast.net I would greatly appreciate it. I

would like to find a good balance of affordablility for the client, but also

make it worth my while. Thanks in advance!

    Kim

  4. My vote is for smugmug.com too. Yes the customizing can be a pain but I think the pictures look great on it. The only downfall for me is that you cannot set up packages at a discount. Everyone keeps bugging them about that so hopefully we'll see that soon. If you do decided to go smugmug, I can give you a discount code and save you a few bucks. Feel free to e-mail me if you want more info. about smugmug. Good luck!
  5. Hi Ariel,

I have the 30D and the 24-70mm. I LOVE IT! I was a bit back and forth before my purchase as well, but decided I wanted the 2.8 for both the low light and depth of field (expecially for dim lit receptions). This is my primary lens. I also have the 70-200 2.8L IS, which goes on my second body, but I only take a handleful of pics with it. I've never tried the 24-105 but I love the 24-70. Good luck!

  6. I have two questions.

First off, I am wondering if any of you have declined a job because of a "gut"

feeling you have about a potential client. As my day job I am a social

worker, and often rely on my gut feeling about people (and I'm usually

right). Anyway, I have a potential client booking for next month and there

just seems to be a lot of struggle thus far (ex. difficulty in meeting and

bargaining with the price). On one side, I see dollar signs, on another, I

don't want to have to deal with an extremely picky client. I don't know...

    any thoughts would be appreciated.

On another note, I just booked a wedding for next year (yeah). The reception

venue has a contract they need me to sign. In the contract it states I need

to have a certificate of insurance which must list the venue as the additional

insured and show liability insurance and worker's comp insurance. As for

insurance, right now I only have insurance covering my equipment. I'm sure

many of you have come across this before. What type of insurance are they

looking for, where can you get it, and have you ever been able to get out

having the insurance and still shoot the wedding? I would hate to lose the

booking. I am considering joining PPA and I know they have malpractice

insurance, but I am thinking that is something different.

Thanks for your help. Good luck to all of you who have weddings tomorrow! (I

have the day off ... but back to work on Sunday.)

  7. Hi Lauren,

On an slightly unrelated matter. I went to your other website from your smugmug website ... I was not able to click on the links to the other pages on the bottom. Such as prices and information about the photographer. You might already know that, but just in case.

  8. Hi Chad,

I started out like you did, light portrait work and low-key weddings. I started with the Rebel XT and used my film camera as back-up (for weddings). I hated carrying extra equipment around but I was to nervous not to have it. I recently purchased the 30D and now use my Rebel as a "back-up". I usually have my 24-70 on the 30D and my 70-200 IS on the Rebel. If outside, I use the rebel without flash and let the lens do the work. Long story short of it, yes, you should have a back up camera, if for nothing else to hold another lens so you don't have to switch as often. As for the wide angle debate... I have a sigma 10-20mm, which I rarely use. Usually the 24mm is wide enough. I've used it a couple times and hope to use it more but I would say a back-up camera is more important. I will also have to second the back-up flash. I had a flash overheat during a reception once and I'm certainly glad I had another. I have the 580ex and the 420ex. So my recommendation, get the Rebel (good camera and fairly cheap these days) and see if you can find a used 420ex or 430ex. Good luck!

PS - Check out the wedding forum if you have not already. A wealth of information is there!

  9. Hi Wendy,

When I first went digital I bought the Rebel XT. I thought it was a great camera until I purchased the 30D. Now, while the Rebel is still a great camera, I barely use it. The 30D and I would imagine the 20D, as well, as more autofocus points than the Rebel. It you are going to buy one, I would recommend the 20D or 30D. For a few hundred more, you are getting a better camera. Some will argue that they are about the same, which I suppose they are ... but to me, the 30D just feels so much better. Good luck and happy shooting!

  10. Hi Martin,

Congratulations on a great purchase. I purchase the same lens not long ago. I have not use it as much as I hoped so far, but it is an amazing lens. Anyway, I use the 24-70/2.8 L. The lens is glued to my camera (30D). So far its been wide enough for me. I do have a wide angle, but don't use it to often. I would definately recommend the 24-70. Good luck!

  11. I have been asked a few times to present my resume. Most recently I have been

asked by a DJ company that is looking to hire a few photographers. I know the

owner of the company and he has already seen my work. He asked for a resume

for their files. I have no photography training, besides one class in

collage. I am basically self taught. I can put when I start my photography

business, but besides that everything else is social work related (I'm also a

social worker.) I've done a handle of weddings. A number of other events and

a bunch of portraits. Any advice on how to process with making my resume.

Anyone else been in this situation and willing to show me a copy of theirs.

My email address is: KimberlyNoelPhotography@comcast.net if you feel so

incline to e-mail me a copy. Thanks!

  12. Hello,

I am shooting a wedding on Sunday and just found out butterflies are going to

be released during the recessional. I'm exciting about the great picture

opportunity. Any one had this done before and would be willing to post

pictures? I would also love any tips you might have found useful. I will be

an outdoor wedding (if the rain ever stops). Thanks!

  13. Hello!

I do a lot of wedding and event photography. I also have a smugmug.com

account, where I upload my high-resolution files so that clients can order

prints. After an event, I normally go to Photoshop Elements (I don't have CS

or CS2, although I do have Photoshop 7) and "Process Multiple File." I do the

auto levels, auto contrast and auto sharping. I process the files into max

resolution jpeg. Anyway, then I go to upload the pictures to my smugmug.com

site, and it takes forever to upload the photos because the files are so big.

Smugmug suggests that pictures be saved a JPEG level "10" versus "12" to save

on the file size. With the processing multiple files, the files are saved

at "12." Does anyone know a batch processing method using elements or

photoshop 7 I can use to save the files at Jpeg 10? I obviously donメt have

time to individual save each photo at size 10. Any help would be

    appreciated. Thanks!!!!

  15. I just updated my Rebel XT and slow lenses and purchased the 30D and the Canon

24-70 2.8/L. I'm so excited about it. Anyway, I did some engagement pictures

yesterday. What I was attempting to do what get the engagement picture in

focus and the B/G to be out of focus. But it did not exactly work out like I

wanted it to. Other examples would be a bride holding out her flowers and the

flower are in focus but the bride is not. I thought having the faster lens

would allow me to do that. Any tips to get that effect?<div>00Gvsh-30582184.jpg.ac9725ae8d71727e0263dcbb3f6bd4b7.jpg</div>

  16. Lucas,

Thanks. Yes I will certain draw up a contract for her. I really don't know much about her. She happened a cross my website and was interested in the image.

Again, if someone can give a ballpark figure for what something like this usually priced at. I feel like saying $100, but I don't know if that is to low or what.

    Thanks!

  17. I had someone contact me regarding the price of the digital file of a picture

I took (of a city). She would like to make a poster for an office. I usually

do portraits and events, so I have no idea where to start pricing a request

    like this. Any thoughts???

    THANKS!!!!

  18. Hello,

I wonder if any one has tried Renaissance, Ventura Self-Mount "Economy Line"

albums or Renaissance "the book - self mount albums"(from Michael's company).

They are very inexpensive, so I am wondering what the quality is like. I

cater to "low-budget" brides/grooms. I have been using sharedink.com for my

albums. They are nice, but somewhat lacking. I am looking for another

alternative and I'm wondering if the Peel and Stick Albums are any good.

    Thanks.
