Jess: I got my 4 year degree in Visual Communications then went to commerical
photography school for about a year. During that time I annoyed just about every
photographer in town (I picked up the yellow pages and googled every photographer I
could find in my area and ask if I could help them for free.) After a while they started the
pay me. And 2 years while working with 8 photo companies I've shoot over 90 weddings
as a second shooter. I still shooting with several companies and I still have a few part time
jobs on the side. And I'm finally starting to pick up my own gigs.
My advice as a humble 24-year-old is to be nice. Let the right people know that you exist
and what you're trying to accomplish. And to keep bugging people.

Generally, AP Mode without flash.
Manual with flash.
-
I always try to impress them with my portfolio. I would say 90% of my clients hire me
before they even meet me in person. Usually the wedding day is the first time we actually
meet because they are from out of town, and they are in for a shock because they see such a
young face. Kier - I'll definitely try to throw in a few more jokes, not a bad idea at all. And
happy birthday Michelle and Bob!!

Does anyone feel discriminated against because of there age, race, or sex?
I'm a young Vietnamese wedding photographer - 23, ( but I look more like an 18-year-old.) And I receive
my B.A. in Photojournalism and have also attend commercial photography school, during that time I
assisted several local photographers in the area and have shoot over 40 weddings with them. Now I work
for several companies -Bellapictures, Cadence Photography, bla bla bla .... And am starting to book my
own weddings but I feel that many of my clients don't trust in me when we meet in person. (This isn't the
case when they see my work online and when we talk in the phone.) I am very professional and I think my
personality is great. But I sense that my age and sometimes "concerns" people. Maybe they just don't like
my work, or my personality, or maybe I'm just being paranoid.

Sorry about the late response. I actually live in FL so I wouldn't be able to give you a ride.
Thanks for offering to help.

I'm shooting a wedding at Valdosta, GA on May 25. It's for a friend so I'm just breaking even (cost wise)
with this job and wil not be able to pay you. If you live in the area and want to add something to your
portolio let me know asap.

Very interesting replies. I guess I posted this question because I know several
photographers who are going through some hard times due to their jobs. And I heard that
the divorce rate for photographers is very high. Its very true that balance is very important
but as we all know with the competition is tough, so it's very easy to work obsessively for
years, before you can find that balance. I'm getting married this Saturday and I plan on
having kids so I'm a bit concerned.
How many of you have kids? I know this is a strange and personal but it seems that most
photographers in my area are single (not married) and without children.
-
Maybe this should be posted elsewhere. But I'm curious if working 60+ a week including every Saturday
night has ruined or signifcantly damaged your personal life. I'll be honest I'm very new in the
photography business and I'm becoming somewhat succesful, but since I've devoted so much of my
time and effort into this, what I love the most - my friends, family, etc... are suffering. I am seriously
considering just working part-time somewhere and doing photography on the side. I guess all of my
teachers where right 'photography is a lifestyle not a job.'

The 'AJZ' are hard to read. Zammit is kerned too much, try to make it tighter.
The word 'photography' is floating by itself. I don't know what AMIPP and ABPPA means.
Maybe I sould know because I'm a photographer, but I don't think most consumers would
know either. And I don't like the purple color.
-
If you don't faith in yourself why would your clients trust you? Get comfortable with the
pressure by being a second shooter, then after 20 or so weddings you'll won't be too
nervous. But don't be too confident either...
-
It's always nice to hear both sides. I would like to thank those photographers who allow
their assistance to use their work. And I do understand and respect those who don't allow
it. I've been very fortunate as a 23-year-old to be doing photography as my living. And I
hope if anything that working with this company will build a good relationship. $250 is a
lot for me. I could pay for 2-months of health insurance or could donate it to a good
cause. So I guess, I could relex on my couch or use the money for a something worth
while. I think I'll do it.
-
Okay, I've worked with several wedding photographers as an assitance or secondary shooter and they
have all let me use the photos I take to add to my portfolio. I also shoot smaller weddings on the side.
I just got a pretty consistant job offer to be a secondary shooter from a new photographer that just
moved in from Cali to FL. And was basically told I would have no rights to use my photos in any sharp
of form.
I understand the logic that you can't have two of the same photos floatering around two different
companies websites and such. And I told the company I would only use the photos to show clients in
person, but I still was denied. How I'm I suppose to promote myself if I can't even show what I do? Do
you think it's worth $225 a gig? Well I shoot for 3 different companies so I guess I'll survive. But I would
hate it if I got the shoot of the lifetime and couldn't use it.

Hello all,
I'm quite new to using Adobe Bride and so far have found in to be the best organizing application out
there. Here's my question... I just shoot a wedding with multiple cameras (which all have the exact time
down to the second) and I want to arrange my photos in bridge according the photos date/second it
was taken. I've heard this was possible, can anyone help me out. It would save me a lot of time!

I use iweb for my business site. It's a bit quirky but will get the job done especially if you
don't know how to make websites. However my photos have turned out to be a bit blurry
and the people at apple can't give me a straight answer.

Thanks! I think I'll give it a try. A friend of mine recommened godaddy.com.

The sites look nice, thanks for the examples. I think it should do what I need.
Jairy how do you get your own site name?
-
Hello all. I've been so busy with school and photography that I haven't had time to market myself. I
thought iweb would a good start. Has anyone used it? If you have show your link I would like to see
what it can do.

I was recently in Hong Kong and the d200 generally goes for $1450 (USD) with a 1 year
Hong Kong warranty. I tried to buy one but my credit card declined me. Make sure to
contact your bank before buying expensive things overseas.

Thanks for help everyone. I'll
will definitely look into Kenko products.

I've came across a Leice M3 at a yard sale
and I could figure out way the lever needed
to be pulled back twice before the shutter would
click.
*I obviously don't know much about manual cameras.
Thanks for the help.

Wow! People reply very quickly here.
During my fist visit I also boasted the ISO to 1600 w/ the 50mm 1.8 but unfortunity I lose
the detail of the coral and fish in the background but test subjects were probably lit.
Moving the B&G adjacent to the acquarium will definetly offer a nice side light which
should allow the use of flash. I'll will definetly come back to do some more test.

Hello fellow photographers. This is my first post here and I hope you guys can help me...
I am an ametuer who was offered a job to shoot a wedding in an aquarium and I think I'm
a bit under prepared. The wedding will be held in front of a large glass aquarium. I went to
the aquarium today for some test shots and I'm having problem lighting up my test
subjects (my best friends) while keeping the glare off the glass. The room is very
dark and large. I tried to bounced the flash straight of the ceiling but I still caught a
significant amount of glare of the glass. I could photoshop the small amount of glare out
but I'm sure there is a better way to do things.
As you can see I have an extremely modest amount of equipment. Any insight will be
welcomed and considered!

An ethical question - Should I go after a couple I already helped booked for another company

I was put in this same situation and I was 100% sure that I would not have been caught by
the other company. It wasn't worth it because it was only one job and most importantly I
didn't want to mess up reputation. In this business if you do anything remotely shady people
will know and you'll lose the respect from clients and photographers. Overall, don't mess up
you reputation over one job.
