1.
Hi everyone,
I am about to buy my new Leica. I have found an intereting offer for an M6ttl and a Summicron 50 serial number 1,303,164. I am meeting the seller in a couple of days to see the material. Here are my questions:
1. The lense is from 1956. Is this a problem?
2. The lense is collapsible. Why? Is this a problem?
3. What tip can you give me to check if the lense and body are in good order?

About me: I am a photography aficionado using digital but missing the film feeling (and light weight). This summer I bought an old Olympus Tripman and loved the results even if quality was not great. I regret selling my Nikon FM3a some years ago. Now I have decided to try the legendary Leica but need your advice.

Many thanks in advance.
2. Do it! I'm in the exactly same position. I understand that your family will not accept a NO for answer. They just don't understand how complicated it is. The wedding of my sister in law is on Friday and I'm pretty scared but I have no option. My humble reccomendation is that you find a friend that knows about photography to come along with his/her camera (as back-up) or someone within this forum might volunteer...

    GOOD LUCK!

  3. Hi Maria,

You should have a look at the courses offered at Central Sain Martins College.

    www.csm.arts.ac.uk

It's a great location in central London. I know they have a one year diploma and the college is know for its fashion

courses. I've just done short courses there. So can't provide with much feedback.

Have also a look at the courses of the University of Westminster (www.wmin.ac.uk)

  4. My sister in law is getting married and they ask me to take some shoots because it's going to be a low key wedding.

I want to do a nice work but I'm worried because I'm completely new to Digital.

    I've bought last week the Nikon D300+ 17-55mm 2.8 + SB-800 and a CF 16GB card.The wedding is on the 12th

    September.

My main concern is not to "lose the photos". My questions:

    1- Which format/quality should I use?

2- Basic tips based on the equipment welcomed?

    3-Flash tips REALLY welcomed.

    Thanks

  5. Thanks for all your comments. Here are my conclusions (to date).

-Computers: I know how to use computers but I am not keen on them. Unfortunately I am stuck in front of a computer with four screens Monday to Friday for 10 hours (working in finance). Thus, the last thing I want to do is to sit in front of the computer in my spare time.

-Weight: I had a feel for the D300+lenses yesterday and it is more heavy than expected.

    - JPEG vs RAW: I think that while I learn the JPEG will be good enough for me. Limited interest in postprocessing.

-Camera: Money is not an issue but I don't want to waste it. I have decided to buy the D80 on Friday. I will be shooting with this camera and with the FM3A to decide if digital is what I'm looking for. Frankly, all the comments related to the big amount of time required for postprocessing scared me a little.

-Last but not least, this forum is full of nice people giving frank opinions. THANKS

  6. Thanks a lot for your answers, I'm surprised how many useful tips. It has been really rewarding (particularly today that my boss is away).

I have bought an iMac because they are supposed to be easier to use. I have limited interest in postprocessing. Thus, based on Mark's comment I assume I should shoot jpeg instead of RAW. Would everybody agree?

  7. I've never used a digital camera (I'm not that keen on computers). I've been using

Nikon's manual FM3A and Nikon manual lenses. Now I want to buy a digital

camera and reading reviews looks like the D300 is the way to go. I'm just

concerned that the complexity for someone with no experience will be too much.

Question 1: Should I go for the D300 or it's too complex?

  8. Hi,

Im an amateur photographer based in London. I shoot film (Mainly

B&W) using Nikon FM3A with fix lenses. Im still not ready for

digital, dont know anything about editing software, printers, etc.

However, now I need to scan some of my B&W photos/film and print

them on A4 inkjet film (for a Fine Art course on silkscreen

    printing).

I bought the Epson 3490 scan and now I have to buy a printer. I need

that the printer delivers good blacks and is easy to use. The price

of the HP8250 looks ok because I wont be using the printer that

much. Do you think it will do the job? Any suggestion?

Thanks and dont crucify me for still using film

  9. Thanks a lot for your help. The right answer was the batteries had died. I still cannot believe that both batteries died on the same day! The cameras were bought on different years!

I probably should have noticed that the light reading was not working properly but given that I use aperture priotity I was not that focused on the light. I was convinced it was something related to the vibration on the truck.

The most bizarre thing is that the cameras work without batteries but they don't work at all when the exhausted batteries are in the camera.

Well I missed some nice photos but I'm really happy because I still have 6 weeks with both cameras. Thanks again.

If only I would have had internet access...

  10. I am travelling with two FM3A cameras through Africa and both cameras

are now broken. The mirror is jammep up in both cameras. What can I

do? I am now in Namibia and next week will get in South Africa

I am traveling on an overland truck so maybe the vibration might be

the problem. I am extremely dissapointed with the cameras because I

have missed plenty of unique opportunities in Botswana and Namibia. I

    would appreciate any help.

    Thanks
