  1. Thank you everyone for your input. It really never dawned on me that the two could have a difference in color (I know it's due our inexperience with the digital format..we're both pretty new to digital, and still like to use our film cameras!) We will be getting back together again to test our settings in more detail and to take into account everyone's input (and I am learning to use RAW & Lightroom as well, so that should help).

    Thanks again....you guys are great!

  2. Hello All,

It's been a long time since I posted, but have been reading these threads

pretty religously. I have come up on a puzzling situation that I'm not sure of

the answer to and am seeking some advice. I don't want this question to turn

into a "Canon vs Nikon" debate...that's not the point at all. I am just seeking

some advice from those who have had this situation come up before. =)

Now onto my question...about a week ago I had the opportunity to photograph a

family reunion for a freind of mine. The main group photo contained 80 people,

so I figured I'd ask a friend/photographer to come along and play second

shooter for the day. She agreed and the shoot went well, until we began to post

process the images. I shoot with a Canon 30D, she was shooting with a Nikon

D80. My images seemed to be alot warmer with deeper yellows and reds. While her

iimages were very cool with more blues and greys coming through. End result was

some serious uneven color balance throughout the entire shoot that required

quite a few late nights to try to even it out (and I'm still not happy with

it!) We are both trying to determine what the cause might be: she was shooting

in RAW and I was in JPEG? or was it our white balance? calibration on our

montors? She had went to talk to a friend of hers who works in our local camera

shop and he said it was a "Canon and Nikon thing" and she got no further

explaination. Call us inexperienced (we are, at least in terms of shooting

together during one event), but I'm really puzzled by this, especially the

reply she got from the camera store. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Is using two different camera brands not recommended, and we should just scrap

the idea of teaming up together?

    Thanks for your advice,

    Adrianne

  3. 1. Seriously part time wedding photographer. I do more studio work than weddings at this time. Someday, hopefully soon, I can break off from the studio and begin assisting a pro. But for now the weekly paycheck from the studio is really rather nice especially with two little ones at home!

    2. I always have had a camera around since I was little. I took pictures at many weddings/events/parties since I was a teen and loved it. Never really considered doing this until I began to work for the studio. I have taken a few weddings being the solo photographer during the past few summers. I'm in no hurry to bring in the big bucks until I can develop more in the technical aspect of the craft.

    3. I have 2 that I'm doing this summer. If a third pops up I won't decline!

    4. Free! LOL! This year I am finally charging for my work! Minimal to cover travel and photography expenses (film, developing, CD's etc.)

  4. Thank you to everyone!!!

You guys just reinforced my initial thought as to carrying on my equipment. No I don't travel alot...this is actually the first time I've stepped foot on a plane since 2002, and back then I had considerably less equipment.

Dave & Lucas, I'm fond of my cameras and glass--but I have no intentions of planting a smooch on any of them-- LOL ;-) !

Marc & anyone who carries film...is it suggested to take the film out of the canisters? I never did before but I suppose with all the new rules...? Would you suggest doing this to make it less of a hassle at the checkpoints?

    Thanks to everyone again!

  5. Hello-

Am wondering how you travel with your gear? Do you check your camera gear in at

the gate or pass it off as a carry-on? I have been looking on the net to see if

there are any regulations about carrying-on a medium sized camera bag but can't

seem to find anything, so am hoping someone can give me some pointers. My bag

is softsided, so the security and saftey of my gear is also an issue. (I'll be

flying on a domestic flight..Cleveland-Chicago). Any advice would be greatly

    appreciated.

    Thanks

  6. Bean bag w/matching (your backdrop) black cover. Just for pics of the baby you can sink the baby in the bean bag and crop as you like. It can get tricky w/toddler- you'll have to get a large enough bean bag so that potentially, you can place both in there together. I would see if tot can hold the newborn using the bean bag as a support (depends on the age of children as well as the comfort level of parents and yourself). There are numerous options for both children together. You may want to google children's photography to get some posing ideas.
  7. Lisa,

I've been there too...actually most recently...ugh. Shot a wedding for a friend a few weeks ago. I was the main photog, and it was done at cost (which is probably my saving grace at the moment!) Was all worked up that I was gonna nail this one (she's extremely photogenic-I've done various shoots for her with beautiful results--thinking this was gonna be a piece of cake). When I got the proofs back, I cried. My flash was too weak (still kicking myself for not testing beforehand! Can vividly see David Schilling's post about having only one chance to do the wedding right and there are no excuses! Araughhhh!), and my pics were somewhere between underexposed and a blur. I spent two weeks PS-ing to salvage what I did get. Needless to say....I know how you feel! I want to thank you for posting this. Your post helped me too, as I'm sure, others who have been in the same boat. After reading this, I'm inspired to keep snapping away, I hope you are too!

  8. Me too! I too, am interested in what others have done to make it work. I work part-time for a photo studio to help make ends meet (and to keep honing in on my techniques. Plus it gives me the opportunity to keep trying new things). I've been wanting to go out on my own for some time now, but can't seem to make it happen. The thought of not having that constant second income always makes me want to wait longer! I do weddings and various other shoots when I get the opportunity, but I just don't know if I can earn what my family needs if I do photography on my own. My kids are still little, so I may just have to wait it out, and keep learning while I'm at it!

Thanks for the great post, Casey!

  9. Karl,

Akron U is where I am planning on taking the happy couple. Since I graduated, there's been a huge redo of the campus and there are some really nice landscaped spots not to mention buildings that could offer a nice background for thier photos. She doesn't want the typical gazeebo/lake photos so I'm racking my brain trying to think of interesting and unique places (it's rather sad I tell you :-( I've lived here my entire life and am at a total brain freeze when it comes to this wedding! LOL!)

Anyway, thanks for the advice! I'll post once all is done and over!

    Take Care,

    Adrianne

  10. Big thanks to everyone for your advice....will be making a few phone calls come Monday (hey! isn't that a song?--sorry couldn't help myself- big Jimmy Buffet fan!)

Bob- thanks for the quick reply, and the idea about offering up services to the school. Seems so simple, but I never would have thought of that!

Karl--I'm in Akron, but really wish Case Western or John Carroll could've been an option, now that I think about it ;-)! And Severence Hall...makes me want to just go with the couple and reshoot thier whole engagement series! Thanks for the input though...I know quite a few (photog students nonetheless!)attending UA so I'll be sure to ask around!

  11. Hello all,

    I have a wedding (short notice!) in about a month. B & G are having a small

church ceremony for family, then want to have pictures taken elsewhere. They

are on a budget, so many of the typical "wedding" spots are out of the question

because they charge a fee. We decided that the local university has

interesting architecture (pillars, fountain, etc) that could serve as a great

backdrop for thier post ceremony photos (not formals, just of the two together

    & w/wedding party).

My question is this, when you select a public area, such as the exterior of a

building or a public park to shoot wedding photographs do you normally call

the administrator/building owner ahead of time to see if it's permitted? I'm

dwelling over whether or not I should contact the university about this. Any

    advice would be great...thanks!

  12. I usually lurk in this forum...don't like to say much but I've been following this thread daily....and I have to write that you guys are amazing! I am amazed at what you can do in PS with these poor images, and am wishing I knew a 1/4 of what you guys do so I could help too. Nice job...if I were Lisa, you guys would be my heroes! :)

    Just my 0.02!

PS> William---I kinda like the last one you posted!

  13. Doug,

To answer your question...re wedding photogs...I guess I'm a wanna-be...I'm a studio portrait photog learning the ropes for weddings. Done a few freebies on location, but nothing worth bragging about...just experience. My real test will be this August when I shoot a friend's wedding in OBX-wish me luck! Anyway, you guys are doing a great job getting this thing together. I hope it all works out and I can meet up with you guys in the fall and learn something new!
