Peter, we all know how much you are in love with Canon, but please others have their preferences too.
-
In terms of optical quality there will be no difference. There is some difference in handling and menu layout. Personally, I find these big enough to prefer Nikons. Other than that - you can get used to both systems and get results you want.
-
D70. Does everything that you probably need and costs less. As to Peter's favorite word "professional"... well.. any1 saw his "professional" work?
-
You should try out Panasonic FZ20. Quite possible its all you need. At least it works that way for many.
-
This is probably an isolated case: a few friends of mine use FZ20s and happy with 'em.
TTL AF - see comment above.
Personal note: This is great camera. Covers practically any scenario that average amateur needs and provides excellent image quality.
-
1st. due to tiny sensor (crop factor is ~6x!) even at 5.6 you'll get an enourmous DOF.
2nd. lens in FZ20 reaches max optical quality at 3 - something, so you don't really need to go higher that 4.0
-
Experience? This is great predictable tool for photography. Can't say anything bad about it. They get quite cheap used these days, I got my from KEH for $330 Ex+

<i>Comparing anectdotal evidence of bullet penetration is pointless. The difference between various steels: mild, rolled, homogeneous, case-hardened, semi-hardened, or hardened, are orders of magnitude</I>
<p>
...and SLR even isn't made of steel. 0.5-0.8 mm thick Al/Mg or Ti alloy at <b>best</b>. Which isn't much of problem for 7.62 round. Now I tend to think that story was made up.
-
Yeah, <i>nice</i> story. Or bullet actually hit the camera but on distance exceeding 3000 feet or so.
-
Keep in mind 70-210 uses old AF system with a lot of moving parts. I've used that lens with both F80 and F90x and in my opinion its not a good match for camera with weak AF actuators. See detailed info here:

Actually I've done "unthinkable" - switched from Canon EOS. Reasons were simple: better viewfinders, better flash system, better low-light AF sensitivity, a LOT better mirror damping and better handling of bodies. To me all that means much more than ECF, USM, IS, ETTL and other alphabetical mambo-jumbo in Canon land.

I got a good friend of mine that runs photostore, so from time to time I get access to practically any photo equipment available on market. To make that relevant to the original topic I can tell that see NO practical difference in image quality from pupular DSLRs (D100 and 10D) under similar conditions on prints up to 8x12". Period. This is what people should expect from similarly positioned and priced products made by reputable imaging companies.

I think Nikon isn't waiting anymore as Canon announced 1dmkii together with its price tag. My guess we should see the d2x announcements within a few months but I do tend to think it'll be priced like 10% less than 1dmkii which could be kinda steep for some1 who shoots for fun (although I do own m6 with Summicron, so I contradict myself). Anyway, my dslr experience tells me that 6 mpxl isn't visibly better than 4mpxl as long as intended print is no larger than 8x12" and that is max size I use for my 99% of my prints. If IMOs are allowed, I'd rather settled with d70 as lightweight and compact digital alternative to my m6.
-
Could be, if rumors that Canon looses money on every 1ds sold are true.
-
The funny thing is: you can't go terribly wrong with either camera (I mean 10d and d100). If your hands grow from right place, both cams will give you the SAME image quality despite all that popular forum noise about "CCD vs CMOS" thing. Maybe except flash system, Nikon's version of which lets you get better results with less efforts. But if you shoot for fun only go for lighter and more compact camera, which means your choice is "limited" to d70 and 300d, if interchangeable dSLR is what you want. And here it looks like d70 is more sensible choice as far as specs concerned + set of DX Nikkors that are already available. My 2 cents,
-
My main concern is mirror slap. If it anything like in D100 then I got nothing else to desire. Well, maybe except 1.5x crop factor but 12-24 DX should take care of that.
-
I just can't believe it. It still takes only one semi educated troll to trigger another round of old C vs N war. Shame on photonetters!

<i>Yuriy Vilin, shove that young Jedi crap where it belongs, pal</i>.
<p>
I'm not your pal. I am a part of photo.net community that serves to help other hobbyists regardless of their age, nationality, gender, color of skin, habits and mating rituals. People say "thanks" here when they get an advice (just so you know). Same applies to you as it is clear you don't really understand things you're talking about.
<p>
<i>My portfolio serves right now as a host for a to-rent...</i>
<p>
Again, if you did know, photo.net portfolio is intended for non-commercial use only.
<p>
<i>I consider myself well above average in photographic talent and techniques.</I>
<p>
Sorry, I haven't noticed.
<p>
<i>Photo.net isn't my life.</i>
<p>
Then you're wasting your time here.
<p>
<i>get back on my topic...</i>
<p>
i did, if this is what you meant with your grammar.
-
<i>Apparently the D2H was a missed opportunity to catch up with Canon, wasn't it? </i>
<p>
Things aren't as simple as you think. Judging from pics in your portfolio you still got much to learn, young Jedi.
-
<i>Based on my reading, however, your judgement in this case falls in the minority.</i>
<p>
Based on your reading? How about your experience? Do I have to argue with every ambitious noob out there that READING and EXPERIENCE are different things
-
Jon, I've used enough cameras to make judgments about their "user-friendliness".
-
Biggest difference between D10 and D100 is user interface. So far, D100 is more user-friendly than Canon counterpart. However, if you can live with multiple menus, windows etc, D10 is fine cam too.
-
There's one more advantage that F80 has over to the F75 - smoothness of mirror/shutter action. F75 clicks rather rough.
