1. You may also want to consider the Canon 30D...believe it or not, it's only about $100 more than the XTi because of Canon's double rebate promo on the 30D (among others). If you buy qualifying lens with the 30D, the rebate values on the 30D and lens are doubled...after rebate, the 30D comes to about $920 plus tax. For this minimal price difference, I would certainly go with the 30D...
  2. Steve, the best bang for the buck 70-300mm lens is the Sigma 70-300mm APO Macro DG. Review comparing it with the Canon 70-300mm IS, 70-200mm f4L, 70-300mm DO IS here: http://www.pbase.com/lightrules/70300s

If you're not ready to shell out serious dough for this telephoto range, the Sigma lens is the best in its price range. If you decide to get it, make sure you're getting the "APO" version...which is the better version than the non-APO Sigma 70-300mm.

  3. Danny, if I were you I would just return the Canon extension tube and get the Kenko extension tube set. For the same price as the Canon, you get 12, 20, and 36mm Kenko tubes in the set. These tubes don't have glass like the Canon tubes. Therefore, you won't be compromising IQ by going third party. Are you intending to use the extension tube w/ your 100-400 IS to do some macro photography?

As far as putting tape on the TC, I used regular scotch tape, and it worked fine. Again...AF will work, but it will hunt...meaning it will have a hard time focusing...and it's possible it may not find the correct focus at all.

  4. Just thinking out of the box, you may want to also consider the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 EX DC or the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 XR Di II lenses. In my personal experience both outperform the Canon 17-40 f4L in terms of sharpness and contrast. Since you mentioned you will be shooting mostly in low light situations either the Sigma or Tamron will suit your needs better.

Comparison here: http://www.pbase.com/lightrules/fourpoundshowdown

Canon 17-55mm IS
Canon 17-85mm IS
Canon 17-40mm f4L
Sigma 18-50mm EX DC
5. As far as warranty goes, I've had good luck with Canon. I bought a Canon 70-200mm IS lens in ebay that had a problem with the IS assembly. I took it personally to Canon in Irvine. The customer service rep was very helpful...she just asked whether I had the receipt and/or warranty card. I said "no". She then asked approximately how old is the lens...I said about 7 months old...I just based it according to the lens date code found on the rear of the lens. She took it in for warranty repair. It was even shipped back to me after 3 days. Final bill...$0.

But anyway, I would not buy the used 5D for $2100. It's considered as used if it's been used. FYI, there will be a $300 rebate on the 5D's come Oct. 15. If you buy a qualifying lens w/ the 5D, the rebate values for both items are doubled. So if you buy the 5D at B&H for $2750, subtract the $600 rebate, you have a brand spanking new 5D for $2150 w/ a receipt w/ your name on it!

  6. A good source for finding info about an online shop is resellerratings.com. marwell isn't even in there. in marwell's site, they claim to have been in business since 2001...if so, they should have been in reselleratings.com by now.

In addition, if you do a whois on marwell-electronics.com, you come up with the following info:

Domain Name.......... marwell-electronics.com
Creation Date........ 2006-10-05
Registration Date.... 2006-10-05
Expiry Date.......... 2007-10-05
Organisation Name.... case martin
Organisation Address. P O Box 99800
Organisation Address.
Organisation Address. EmeryVille
Organisation Address. 94662
Organisation Address. CA
Organisation Address. US

Something fishy going on here...a 4 day old domain name?!

I looked at their prices...20D body for $608?! 20D w/ 18-55mm kit lens for $592?! Run away, and run away fast! Why bother getting a body only if the body w/ kit lens is cheaper?! This is typical scam. You order the camera, they call you back to sell you overpriced accessories, and if you don't buy them, they suddenly tell you that the 20D is out of stock.

Typically, if the price is $100 less than B&H pricing, then you will experience the above.

7. Hi Steve, I only got into DSLR photography about a year ago. I was in the same boat as you. If you don't mind getting slightly used/mint condition photo equipment, I'd go that route instead of new ebay packages. The Classified Ads forum here is a good source to find excellent equipment. Another excellent source is fredmiranda.com's Buy/Sell forum.

For $1600, it'll be easy to get the following in mint condition:

    Canon 20D - $750

    Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 EX DC - $325

    Canon 50mm f1.8 - $60

    Canon 70-300mm IS or Canon 70-200mm f4L - $500

The above gear will blow away ANY ebay package you'll get for $1600. Every item in that list is quality stuff.
