I would agree that taking the temperature in Kelvin is qualitative and I understand your measure needs to be demanding but is that the right way to go?! I would say not... Get yourself an ExpoDisk for your lenses... I have one with my 5D and I use 16-35 f2.8L and 70-200 f2.8L IS lenses, both with a 77mm thread. What you do with the disk is take a test shot with the disk attached, shooting at your light source, you then take the shot and use it as your custom white space for Custom White Balance.

It's quick, easy and you can carry the ExpoDisk much easier than a White/Grey Card... I got mine from WarehouseExpress.com here in the UK but B&H is good to go... and no I'm not on sales commission... just happy to help!

  2. Davide, I moved up to the 5D from a 20D (the same crop factor as your 30D option)... This gave my existing lenses a new lease of life.. wide angle means just that! If you do go 30D and the EF-S lenses then you would need to replace the lenses too when you move to a full-frame sensor as these do not work with the 5D (I'm sure you know this already!).
  3. I am lucky enough to own a 5D and the 16-35 f2.8 and whilst I did consider buying the 17-40 f4 I promised myself I would buy the best glass I could. I also own a 70-200 f2.8 IS and the rationale behind me wanting these lenses is simple. With the use of the Canon 2x converter I could cover 16-35 at f2.8 then 32-70 at f4 (with the converter on, losing 2 stops) then 70-200 at f2.8 and finally 140-400 at f4. This is my logic and I know there'l be folks out there who don't agree with it. As for sharpness, I have a good number of shots (albeit JPEG renderings) on here that were taken with the 16-35, so take a look! You pay your money and you take your choice.
  4. Hi Bob. I agree with Robin on this one... get yourself a 20D. I was in a fortunate enough position to be able to make the hop from 10D to 20D last year but in hindsight I shouldn't have bothered. It's not that I don't think the 20D is an excellent camera, it is and does a great job at landscape and portrait work. I just realised my mistake when I started buying decent galss for it. I've recently bought the 16-35mm f/2.8L lens from Canon and it's a revelation. I wanted wide angle but didn't want to go down the EF-S lens route, knowing that I would buy a full frame sensor camera one day. The 1.6x factor on the 20D doesn't compromise my picture taking at all with this lens. My advice therefore is to taket he money for the 5D/MkIIN from your pocket and buy a 20D with the best glass you can afford. The eyes have to see before the brain can respond is what my old photography teacher used to tell me all the time. With digital, this is definitely the case. You will then have the right sort of glass when you do eventually move to full frame digital in a couple of years (1DMkIII?)
