  1. Thanks, JD. We'll probably skirt Antelope and head straight to Navajo. How far in do you think the campsite that you referenced is? One day by kayak, figuring we can probably cover 10 miles comfortably in a day? We had given thought to renting a power or pontoon boat while there, but I understand that this requires a fairly significant lead time... maybe for the next trip. I'm playing with some J & C Micro 25 with the Linhof, (which develops magnificently in Technidol, BTW)... think there will be some decent spots to set up the LF? We'll also be shooting a lot of IR, both film and digital... at least hoping to get some dramatic images.

    Thanks all for the input!

  2. Thanks for the thoughts, all. The kayaks have a watertight (water resistant?) compartment, and I was planning for the pelican case for the digital and lenses. The Linhof fits in a backpack, and was going to use a drybag for it, along with a couple of plastic bags and a towel. Will upload photos upon return.
  3. My son and I will be kayaking into Antelope Canyon at Lake Powell starting 31

July this year, and spending 4 or 5 days on the lake. Any helpful suggestions,

locations, ideas? We'll be taking both an old Linhof LF and my shiny new 5D. We

might also explore Navajo Canyon. Thanks!

  4. The digital rebel has a IR blocking filter in front of the imaging chip which is quite effective. I have not done any tests with the Hoya, but I have plans to test with the 87 Wratten... just haven't done that yet.

There is a thread re: this subject here: http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00DTR1

Looks like you might have some success with long exposures in bright sunlight.

There is also a company that will [permanently] convert your Rebel to IR only: http://www.irdigital.net/

Once I have my new EOS 5D, I plan to send the Rebel in for conversion.

For film enthusiasts, MACO makes an awesome IR film... however, be warned, exposures will be significantly longer than Kodak high speed infrared. I expose the Kodak at ISO 320, but the MACO needs about ISO 25, and bracket heavily.

    Enjoy!

  5. Cades Cove has many opportunities for photography, but Charles is correct... very crowded. If possible, go during the week (many fewer people), and camp at the park so that you can be up before sunrise to get to a pre-determined spot. In addition, take an umbrella... rained every minute that we were there in July, but it might be better in October.

    Good luck, and enjoy!
