I just discovered and interesting thread at Nikonians.org in the D40 formum
about getting a dark/black frame with a funny Auto Iso value of 100.
Have any of you seen this issue also?
Here is the address of the thread:

I like the Canon A540 for light travel or a bit heavier the Nikon D40. The D40 is great for travel wrapped in a jumper in my carry-on luggage. Even with standard kit lens it gives very sharp pictures and all I need is a spare battery and charger.

Hi John,
It looks like pure marketing/cost saving decision. The D40/D40x is suppossed to grab customers upgrading from a point and shot and Nikon seems to think that these customers will stick with the kit lens plus one consumer telephoto AF-S. The issue is that most will love the performance of a DSLR and then look into lens options and then discover they are very limited. I think Nikon has a lot of gaps to fill this year ;-) would be great to see AF-S primes :-).

Been busy with work and it was rainy too but I did manage to take some test pictures in the last few days. They are not carried out like a scintific experiment (same paramaters etc.) but just would like to share first impressions but I will be careful not to draw to many conclusions. Auto WB seems to be on the cool side in daylight and indoors to warm for my taste. But as the D40 has WB fine adjustments I will be able to tweak the settings to my liking. Metering seems to blow out highlights compared to the D70. On the D70 I had dialled in +0.3EV all the time on the D40 it looks like I need to dial in -0.7 when using matrix metering for some situations anyway. I am impressed with the JPEG in-camera processing. Looks like it's improved over the D70 and more like my Canon A540 which produces great pictures out of camera. I will share some test pictures.<div></div>

Yes, I know the limitation on lenses supported. For me this is only a walk-around camera and currently I want to use the 18-55mm and 18-70mm DX lenses with it until I get the 18-200mm DX VR. For good primes I am looking at the K10D with some nice Pentax lenses but not sure yet...
It's raining today so no outdoor shots yet grrrrr...

I was looking for a replacement for my D70 and was deliberatly looking for a
downgrade in terms of size but improvment in terms of out of camera JPEG
quality and good high ISO performance and after reading some reviews over the
last few days I was thinking of either getting a good deal on the D50 or get
the D40.
It took me only a few minutes to make a decission... very compfortable to hold
and feels very well built, espacially considering its the entry-level DSLR from
Nikon.
Now I need to take some pictures and compare them with my D70.

I am based in the UK and Ireland and looking for an Ecommerce site
like e.g. www.collage.net. Does anybody know if any of the US based
sites ship to UK / Ireland or do you know a good Ecommenrce site for
selling event pictures in the UK?

A wedding photographer on Cyprus told me that he uses a "strong" flash to balance the light coming from the Sun when shooting into the light. He uses manual settings. However, I did some tests with my D70 and SB600 and found that i-TTL in combination with spot metering seems to work well for me.
