1.
Thank you very much for these opinions.
Someone has just bought 1N so for the time being I have to choose between EOS 3 and EOS 5 but I have added EOS 30 to the list because of its size (after reading Alberto's comment). 1V is available but too expensive (I would prefer to buy another 5D body instead). EOS 3 build quality, AF and the fact that these bodies are generally in better condition than EOS 5 are strong arguments for this camera. But build quality means weight and as Jamie writes the sophisticated AF may not be a huge advantage in the street.
I can and use my 5D for street photography. But as I use primes (35, 50 and 100) a second body would be helpful. Another 5D or 5D Mark II is an expensive option and I am not sure if I need such a camera at the moment. Apart from the 1V, film cameras are cheap and so buying one I get a full-frame camera for less money (I need full-frame and that is why I do not use 450D for street despite the fact that my wife has one and I might probably borrow it - I am not sure I haven't asked her yet ;) ). It could work as a backup during my travels too. What is more having two kind of bodies - film and digital - at the same time may give me more flexibility, film is still better for contrasty situations etc.
As to the noise, for me street photography is not limited to streets, there are many more locations like cafe interiors, churches, staircases, shops where taking a candid photo is much more difficult. That is why the noise is so important for me. But maybe I expect too much from SLRs...

  2.
I have a dilemma. I use EOS 5D but recently I decided to buy another body that would be used for street photography only (with 35 f/1.4 and 50 f/1.4 lenses) and I think that a film camera would be perfect for my needs. Of course I thought about rangefinders but as I have some good Canon primes and I am not keen on using RF cameras I thought that it would be better to buy a Canon film SLR. At the moment there are three second hand options available where I live (Poland): EOS 1N with vertical grip, EOS 3 and EOS 5 with vertical grip. EOS 5 is cheaper but the differences are not that big so what bothers me the most is: which of these three cameras would be better for my goal i.e. street people photography?
Noise is one of the most important isuues. I have read that EOS 5 is less noisy than EOS 3 but I have not read anything about 1N in this regard (I mean the noise generated by the mirror, shutter and film transport). Do you think that EOS 5 or 1N noise is good enough for candid street photos? Or should I invest in a rangefinder rather and practice manual focusing? I know these questions may sound naive but I wonder what are your subjective opinions and feelings -- of course I would like to know the opinions of those who used any of these cameras taking street people photos and so have some real experience in this field.
I know that AF in EOS 3 is better but is the difference really substantial here, I mean - would you prefer noisy EOS 3 because of its faster AF for street?
Any other opinons are welcome.

  3. As a matter of fact it is a very popular motif in Poland, something

that may be considered as an illustration of Polish Pop Christianity

which is frequently impassioned and naive at the same time. But on

the other hand the cross symbolizes the Christianity in its pure

original form - a point of reference that should be shared by all

the believers. The setting sun brought in a special light and mood.

    Where does this road lead?
00HsFC-32081984.jpg.dc4651badadf4142c2e7dd9c6491eda0.jpg

  4. I have bought Canon 5D with 17-40 f/4 and 24-105 f/4 lenses. As it

is a full-frame digital camera I consider buying slim filters (UV

and cir-pol) to avoid vignetting at wide angle. I think about the

    following options:

    1. UV - B+W MRC Slim 77mm (in Poland I have to wait for this about 2

months, the ring has 3 mm thickness); B+W NC Slim 77mm (available, 3

    mm ring) and Heliopan SH-PMC 77mm (available, 4 mm ring);

    2. Cir pol - B+W Cir Pol Kasemann slim (2 months wait, 5 mm ring)

and Heliopan SH-PMC Slim (available, 5 mm ring).

Please help me. First of all does someone have experience with both

B+W and Heliopan? I know B+W filters only - they have top quality,

but I heard that Heliopan filters are even better. And what is even

more important for me: what is your experience with 17-40 lens used

    at 17mm and 24-105 lens used at 24mm together with 3mm, 4mm and 5mm

filters? In which case my filter will cause vignetting? I need a

specific answer from someone who has used these lenses, not

speculations, which I have found in previous threads.

  5. Neil, you are right. Some nudes are tasteless - usually these are not rated well. Some are extremely provocative but original (somebody could say "artistic") - who can judge if a particular image of this kind is worth watching in TRP? If it had got high marks then it should be treated as well as a stunning landscape image. I like photo.net for the freedom that it offers. And I do not like treating other people with condescension - people who like nudes are not monkeys after all. "We can't just ignore the controversial appeal of nude photogoraphy". Please Matt do not take this as an offence, but it would be appropriate here to explain why we can not ignore that. Because as far as I am concerned I think we should ignore this "controversial appeal".

Ellis, why have you been astonished so much? Here in Poland for example the art of photography has very good traditions (with such great masters as Hartwig or Beksinski). Under the communism the photography was a common hobby - it offered a freedom of expression; a bathroom transformed from time to time into a makeshift darkroom became a temporary island of liberty for many. Now the popularity of photography is even growing with the increasing number of hobbyists who can afford the expensive equipment. After all it is not so astonishing that many "strange" looking names are appearing in the TRP section.
