1.
Just curious as to why all the fear over the handing over of RAW images to this competition, and supposed 'stealing work'?? This is the most prestigious wildlife photography competition in the world run by the BBC and the London Natural History Museum. It has been running since 1964!

There is some serious paranoia here...
Good luck recovering your RAWs!

  2.
Thanks all, for your time and considered responses, the advice is much appreciated. I have spare batteries and memory, they just seemed to be a given so I didn't include them on the list is all.
As for a backup body, I may be able to borrow a 450D from a friend that would be a perfect backup.
I should have the freedom to roam free on the day, but I will go and investigate the site this weekend and take some test shots to try and avoid as many surprises as possible.
Thanks again,
3.
Hi all,
I'm soon to be doing my second paid event photography job. My first was a project close party in a very dimly lit bar, very tricky, had to learn how to use a flash on the fly (not sure I actually learnt much...still heaps to learn!), but I just about pulled it off, albeit with much tweaking in Lightroom.
My next job will be a couple of hours shooting a tree planting ceremony in London. It will presumably be overcast (this is London in winter), though possibly sunny, and there will be one crucial photo I need to capture including a VIP.
My question, vague though it may be, is what advice could anyone give me on shooting such an event? I am aiming to provide 40+ photos to the client (too few? last job I provided around 60 - too many?!) and set up a web gallery as in the first job.

Equipment I own includes:
Canon 40D,
Canon 17-85mm f4-5.6,
Canon 50mm f1.8,
Canon 75-300mm,
Third party speedlight,
A decent tripod.

I am thinking it may be necessary to hire a lens or lenses that would give better image quality and a bit more to play with aperture wise...17-55 f2.8 for example.
Any advice anyone would be willing to offer on such a job would be much appreciated and may help calm my nerves somewhat!
Kind regards,
Josh

  4. Thanks everyone for all your considered responses...looks like I've got some more research and decisions to make! The inverter sounds interesting - I'd not heard of these before so will check these out in more detail before I make a purchase, in any case, I don't think I can go wrong with a stack of extra B511s...
  5. Hi all,

OK, so a few questions here, hope this isn't too muddled...my girlfriend and I have a trip to Australia planned

for the end of the year for one month. We'll be traveling by car for much of this time, camping, so with limited

chance to recharge batteries from the mains - potentially for up to a week.

As we have access to a car - potentially I can charge my batteries via this. I use a 40D so could use the CB-570

but as far as I'm aware this requires purchasing another charger - is this not compatible with my bundled

charger? Together that's a lot of money for something I will use for one trip only (I don't own or need a car

here in London), especially as I need to fork out for an additional battery and some more memory for this trip too.

Another route I was considering was solar power. Does anyone have experience using something such as the

Powermonkey (or similar) to charge SLR batteries? How effective is this? This is a route I'm quite interested in

as it would be useful to charge other things (phone, Ipod etc) and I'm not expecting any shortage of sun in Oz at

    that time of year!

Finally on a slightly different note, I'm looking to attempt some star trails whilst I'm away from the cities,

but currently don't own a cable release. Yet more money I know, but any recommendations for this for the 40D?

I'll obviously need to lock it on bulb but am unsure which models I'm able to do this on, and which, if any I'm

able to set the length of exposure on (i.e. so it can be left unattended for however long to make the exposure).

OK, alot there I know so any advice on any of this is very welcome! I'm good for equipment otherwise (happy with

my current lens selection - for now :) - good tripod/head, etc, etc, just need to firm up my peripherals)

    Thanks!

    Josh

  6. Thanks for the advice everyone.

Chris - I've tried your checks, the mount seems firm to me so I don't think that should be a problem. Trying DOF preview at f22, this seems it may be the issue. Pressing DOF preview, 1 in 10 previews the shutters stick. Is there anything that can be done about this or any reason this may be happening?

  7. Hi all,

I bought a Canon EF50mm 1.8 off ebay about 8 months ago, and recently it has been playing up - quite frequently I

get an 'error 99' message and the shutters freeze in their open position. This takes several switches on/off and

a few presses of the shutter to rectify and is very frustrating!

I have cleaned the lens and camera contacts with an eraser but this still happens. Also, this has never happened

with any of my other lenses. I am using a Canon 350D.

Has anyone else experienced this? I know the error 99 is a non specific message so I am none the wiser as to what

    the problem is.

Short of sending to Canon or even replacing the lens(!) does anyone have nay advice?

    Thank you!
