I appreciate your comments guys. John P, thanks for the suggestion. I have been using the fill setting on the flash to force it to fire as suggested in the manual, but after reading your comments experimented with second curtain. I found that I can force firing in 2nd curtain if I'm in shutter priority or manual, so that's one more reason to discard sports mode and set things up manually. And all this time I've been trying to overcome this problem by perfecting my panning technique so your suggestion was very useful, cheers!

I like the colours and the texture of the clouds, and a nice capture of the flock of geese. I do find the tilted horizon, emphasised by the background elements slightly offputting.

Yeh admittedly this isn't the sharpest shot I've taken but I liked the "trajectory" better than others at the same spot. Focus is sharpest on the riders left hand but I think most of the softness is due to motion blur, like I said it's hard to be spot on with panning at the speed these guys travel. Also I did little or no sharpening in PP as it detracts from the blurring of the backround.

Hi David, thanks for taking the time to comment. I'm not sure what you mean by out of focus. Is it the blurred backround you refer to? That's an effect I usally aim for in MTB shots, and is actually fairly subdued in this shot. Generally I would go for 1/30 - 1/80 but was at 1/250 here as the elite mens category were blasting off this point at 40kph+, hard to get an accurate panning shot at that speed when I'm only 2 meters from the track.

Taken at a round of the NSW state downhill championships, critiques
are welcomed.

I feel this shot captured the boredom and sadness I saw in the adult
chimps at the zoo

Taken during my first attempt at working under 'studio' conditions.
Actually in my friends apartment with a black backdrop. Lit using
household spots for ambient light, bounce & fill flash on camera.

One of them anyway. Thanks for looking.

Nice capture but very blown out clouds, maybe a strong fill flash would help balance the exposure.

There seems to much discussion about how to avoid/reduce lens flare
and I have learned from reading these threads. Sometimes though, I
think that it can add a nice effect to an image. As always this
beginner welcomes any comments, critiques and suggestions, thanks!

Fantastic colour & feel to the clouds. I quite often like lens flare however I feel it detracts from this photo. The horizon seems off level (one of my biggest gripes with my own shots)but that can be fixed with ps. Was this taken from an aircraft window?
