  1. <p>I have recently acquired an Exakta 70-210 F4.5-5.6 MC Macro lens in Nikon AIs mount. I have tried to search for this lens on the net buit I cannot find any references to it anywhere. It just seemed an interesting lens. The lens seems very similar to photos that I have seen of a nikon 70-210 but I don't actually have that lens so I have tried it against a Nikon 200 F4 glass and the results seem to be very similar on first looks except a bit warmer. Has any of you heard about this lens?</p>
  2. <p>William, that would be interesting as well. I have a number of old Practica, Zenith and Pentax M42 bodies and a D70 and D200 (I know they are State-of-the-ARK). I could experiment with those as well if someone responds to your question.</p>
  3. <p>Thanks for all the responses. I wanted to try out a comparatively cheaper M42 400-500mm lens for wildlife and also use the Zeiss/Myer-Optic/Takumar lenses (that I laready own) for close-ups. The difference in price for with/without rear lens on the adaptor is phenomenal, the lens variety being around £30 and without-lens for about £5. I was particularly interested in Edward's response of the negative impact that the additional lens will have. I guess I will try the macro first and see how the lenses perform - just for fun, as I already have sufficient Nikon glass upto 300mm for other uses.</p>
  4. <p>I would like to try some Carl Zeiss and Pentax M42 lenses on my D200. Has anyone ever try a Kood M42 lens to Nikon F adapter which claims to have an optical element to compensate for the flange difference. It costs around £30 in the UK but is it worth it just for fun?</p>
  5. <p>Hi Fred, the 35-80 is there as a backup permanently mounted on the backup D70. I will also be carrying a backup flash which I will leave in the car but its good advice from you. I do find the 18-70 of not a bad quality and it is wider than the 35-80 particularly on a 1.5 crop. I may even mount the 35-80 on a tripod ready to go on to if I should have to. Looking at the hall I probably would bge using the zoom in the 50-70 area most of the time anyway.</p>

The event is not until 14 October so I have time to get some practice done. I have ordered a large quantity of alkaline batteries as I find NimH don't seem to last long in the flash. Taha</p>

  8. <p>I have been asked to cover a formal business fairly academic event (Annual Lecture), indoor in a lecture theatre. I will have complete control of where I position myself and opportunities for any informal shots including backstage.<br>

    I will be carrying a D200 (plus D70 backup) body. 18-70mm (f3.5-4), 50mm (f1.8), 35-80mm (f3.5) and a Metz 48 AF1n flashgun with a soft flash diffuser. I have never covered such an event. What have I forgotten? Also, are there any useful techniques I need to be aware of? Many thanks. Taha</p>

  9. <p>Wow, I was fascinated by the photos that I have seen here. I am definitely hoping to get one in next Wednesday - oh that's tomorrow - well maybe the following Wednesday then. One photo that stood out for me was by paul sooHoo's 'Crescent'. I can see the power of D300 in that photo.</p>
  10. The use of extension tubes is fraught with difficulties of its own. The amount of light reaching the camera sensors reduces progressively as you use longer tubes. The other 'cheap' alternative is to use a lens reversing ring which is available at a very reasonable cost. You have to get a specific size ring for the filter size of the lens that you may want to use. It does create the problems of having to use manual metering and manual focus. See the results of such an option here: http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=6162190 Magnification is extremely high with a lens reversing ring and they are a fraction of the cost of extension tubes. Nothing is easy though and I am still learning after all these years so keep experimenting.
  11. I have been experiencing problems of slow page loads for the past couple of days, but it is at its severest today. I can live with the fact that the site will be slow whenever there is a need for upgrades etc. but I do hope this does not take the rest of the month to complete. BTW the site is looking much neater with new fonts and layouts.
