Interesting folder, perhaps more for its failures than its sucesses. This picture in particular reminds me of some moments in Clockwork Orange which mix prudery with an attempt at violent eroticism and undermine themselves - I'm thinking of the Billy Boy rape scene in particular, the way the hands of the rapists shy from grabbing the breasts of the "young devotchka". I see a lot of images like this and wonder whether a more direct approach to "sensuality" might not be more effective. One of my favourite explicit shots is the one of a couple necking in Nan Goldin's Ballad, where the guy has his hand down the girl's knickers while they are kissing. That is direct and lyrical; I find this shot frustrating to look at and the question of what is going on swamps its putative sensuality. The visual puzzlement makes it hard to get involved with the intimacy of the moment. Also I have to say that BW nude couple shots can be rather clinical; this one leaves me cold.
  1. "But gear plays a small part in getting a photograph. And when you can walk into a camera shop, plonk a bit of cash on the counter for an excellent, 25 year-old, prime lens, and effectively walk out a better photographer..."

Sam, maybe you could tell me which photo gear shop you go to, I could do with one of those lenses myself!
