  1. Thank you everyone! After I posted this I found the dimmer switches...I think I might go that route. Call me a yellow bellied..Lily Livered coward but telling him that I don't like them just isn't an option at this point. I did that with an Anniversary gift once...and although NOW he agrees that his taste in jewlery and mine are totally different ..at the time he was so upset that I didn't like his gift that he swore never to buy me anything special again. So I just can't do it! LOL

Money is not a HUGE problem. I think had he known the difference he would have paid the extra. He just listened to the Ritz guy.

Here is a photo I took with this set up on Mothers Day. I really like the way they turned out..but it was HOT!! I live in Houston Texas and the room is on the second floor so even with AC running it's really warm. I'll just have to put it on "freeze" and when he complains about the electricty bill I'll say "Well sweetie if we sell these lights and buy these...."...(insert evil laugh here.)<div>00LG7h-36646684.jpg.381458dafb46205254f4f19db9586deb.jpg</div>

  2. I'm working up to that...but he was so excited when he gave this to me that I don't want to hurt his feelings. Not necessarily returning them but selling them and buying something I'd rather have. For now I have to use them the best I can and then as time goes by replace and upgrade. That way he will think I've grown out of the lights and need something better. ;-) The sad part is that he said he had paid for a set that would have been much closer to what I needed and then changed his mind and bought this one instead because he didn't think I needed to have the lights synched with my camera. UGH! I told him "that's what I wanted actually" and he looked so crestfallen that I said "I'm sure this will be fine too!!"...Yeah I know...Bad move! LOL
  3. My husband is the sweetest man alive and I'm not complaining really! However he

doesn't know anything about photography and less about lighting. I had

expressed a desire to purchase some lighting for a 12x13 room and use it as a

practice studio. Well...On mothers day he went to a local camera shop and they

sold him this http://www.calumetphoto.com/item/SV3566/ I have no idea what the

most effective way to use this would be. If I express disappointment he will be

hurt but quite frankly the lights are 500 watts and they are hotter than hell.

The room doesn't seem big enough for three lights and there are no strobes. I

have a Nikon D70d and a SB600 external flash. Are there any suggestions on what

I should do with this set up? What can I add inexpensively to help me use it

until I can upgrade to something else? Right now I have two of the lamps set up

but the shadows are harsh and I can hardly stay in the room.

  4. hmmmmm...just wanted to admit that I started using plastic dinnerwear to make swabs last year!! I thought the ones online looked so similar that WHY NOT??? It works great! Oh! And I use a small bandaid to hold the pads on and I'm VERY careful not to touch anything but the pad to the sensor...the angle of a plastic knife is perfect!
  5. Well.. from what I've seen around here since I joined, the administration and moderators are not known to be "cute" very often. So if I were you Mr. Jackson I would embrace the "Elves" because it's about as adoreable as they get round here!

BTW I make a MEAN hot coa-coa...could I be an elf too?

  6. Ben it's the "presentation" that I tried to move photos around in. First I tried moving them by moving them up and down. There is a feature that does that. However that is mindboggeling when you have a lot of photos. Then I deleted the whole presentation and started over. This time downloading them in the order I wanted them to be posted. That didn't work either. They didn't load like I had arranged them. Finally I gave up and just did the best I could. I'd like to be able to make my photos tell a story in the presentation along with the text. So if this is something that could be fixed eventually it would be AWESOME!
  7. Will...Yes you are right. However if you read above the last example is what my brother would get just in German. The English language doesn't translate literally to German. There are words that don't exsist and words that don't translate. Our every day phrases for example don't translate correctly when I use them. So when the text is translated you get the mess that you saw above. Now in my case I will go back through my English text and change the words around until I get something that translates as close as possible. Which is why I like the site I provided the link for. It shows you the translation of what you are sending so that you can see if it will be clear or not. Most sites don't do that.

At times the English and German will translate closely enough that it's understandable but other times it's just a hodge podge of words that make little if any sense.

I agree it would be helpful in critiques but for a forum discussion it might be difficult to get something that translated clearly.

  8. There is a site called IMtranslator

    http://freetranslation.paralink.com/Default.asp?PX=b&z=s&m=2

This one allows you to type in your language it then translates it into the language you choose and then it "Back translates it" or trnasliterates it. That way you can see exactly what will be read. It helps a lot because then you can go back in and change the wording until you are satisfied.

I've included a translation of the first post into German and then back translated.

    And here is the tranliteration....

ask yourselves whether Brian think wrde of combining a Web-bersetzer to photo.net. There is a side called of the Babels fish which permits to a person to the type text in her mother tongue and whlen which language it should become bersetzt. I think that improve the communication auerordentlich and more dialog among people frdern she could not speak each other? see language.

I pull? t know about how difficultly his wrde because I pull? t write code, but maybe Brian could use just Babel fish? see engine even as uses the side google? see search engine.

This one is actually my favorite but it still takes WAY too much work! :-)

  9. I don't think I said that it required rocket science. I did say that it was not very accurate in it's translations. As jon mentions it takes some patience for the reader to figure out the tranaslation. It would help for small comments but anything else might not be worth it. I do know what I am talking about as I've tried so many of these in hopes of finding one that could break down the language barrier between my brother and I. My German is VERY bad and his english is worse! :-)

  10. Will,

I have a little experience with these translators. My brother and were seperated when we were children and ultimately grew up in different countries. Myself in the U.S.A and my brother in Germany. When we finally found each other there was/is a huge language barrier. I e-mail him using Babel. The problem is that there just isn't a good way (for free) to do this and the translations are very crude.

Also there are limits to the amount words. It might help...but for a post that is lengthy it's a time consuming and not very effective venture! just my humble opinion though!

  11. David,

I tried to load pictures according to how I wanted them ordered for my presentation about the USMC. I spent a long time picking and choosing just to be sure I got the order right and guess what? After I loaded them all...they weren't in order! haha..So at least in my case that didn't work. I have a few more pictures I'd like to add to my presentation but I wont because it will mess up the flow that I is there now...

  12. Well why didn't ya say so Charly! :-) I agree! But guess what? I was one of the high nooners at one time too! In fact there are photos in my portfolio right now that I took at noon because I thought the subject was too cute to pass up. I've learned though that photography is a lot like sex. Slow down and pay attention and you'll have a lot more fun! :-)

  13. I also just want to mention that even though some of us take pictures of ordinary things and there may be a lot of similarities in what we photograph...(barns, flowers, hot air baloons..etc) When I see the work of someone else..I appreciate the "eye" that they used to capture this object. It isn't the same as mine or yours or anyone else's ...That's what is exciting about photography..WE all see things differently and the flower I see today and the reasons I photographed it are mine personaly and no one can take that away or make light of it...Unless they are coming from a place of pure ego...

  14. Charly I had a look at your portfolio and I think it's beautiful..However I see at least two Rusy vehicles and several single flowers...However for whatever reason you didn't find your own work to be "same-old" or "bland". I think it's much that way for many of us. When I look back at the first photos I started taking and that I thought were terrific...and compare it to photos I take now I see a lot of progress..Yet you would go into my portfolio and call it Same-old and bland. Which is why we should take photos of things we love and NOT try to impress each other.

I'm an interpreter for the hearing impaired and there is NOTHING worse than interpreting in front of my peers...It's the same here.

  15. Ok here is my two cents...(ducking and dodging already!) I very rarely go looking for the nudes..However at times when I am in the critique forum or the recent rate forum I will see them. There was one this morning that was very nice and I left a comment. However once and awhile...A nude will pop up that no matter how artisticly it was done or no matter the quality of the image...the timing is bad! For example I clicked on the "gallery" a few minutes ago and the picture that was there was a nude. My daughter just happened to be standing beside me. We are a pretty open family so it wasn't a big deal but not everyone is..and those that don't feel comfortable with this shouldn't be treated like they are closed minded prehistoric, freaks of nature! We all have different backgrounds and different belief systems. What might be alright for me may not be alright for someone else. Why should they feel as though they aren't worthwhile contributers here just because they have an opinion about nudity that doesn't agree with some of us?

As for the sunrise/sunset comment....Over saturation is NOT the same as a picture of a hairless crotch and big set of breasts..to someone who was raised to believe that it's inappropriate.

  16. I think it's a good idea..I came to Pnet as someone who had a camera and took LOTS of pictures of flowers...A friend I worked with had signed up here and he showed me his portfolio...I was a "lay" person. Now photography is my passion...looking at the photos here is what inspired me to get more involved. Had I NOT been interested in photography I doubt that no matter how beautiful the pictures were I would have stayed long.

I think as long as it stays a "link" and not a feature that people can add text to the pictures...it should be fine. It's not something that isn't already done anyway.

  17. Hi!

I have a question. Is there a way to change the order inwhich your

pictures are set up? For example I created the folder USMC and I

uploaded some pictures I took during my sons graduation. I would

like to move them around to create a better flow. I had the same

difficulty when I tried to create a presentation. Although it will

allow me to "replace with the previous photo" it made my head swim

to try and get them all sorted that way so I gave up.

I even tried deleting the whole presentation and uploading them in

the order that I wanted and they still appeared differently.

    Thanks in advance!

  18. I just went and had a look and it seems that he may be removing them.. I get up to about four hundred images and then I get nothing but boxes with red x's...I left it alone to see if they would continue to load but that was all there was. Well I don't know if I should be happy or insulted....Not ONE of those pictures was one of mine...:-)
