I almost agree with what Dick has just said, although you don't have to learn the rules in order to be able to break them - you need to learn the rules so that the elitists who define the rules in the first place will respect your work when you do break them.

From the art world look what happened to poor Rousseau..

Nice question! My immediate response is that "greatness" is almost completely subjective. Some of the descriptions of "greatness" above are more like descriptions of "impressiveness" or "momentousness". I like what Ellis says above. Hugo

The only faith I have when I press the shutter is that this will lead to a photo being taken; but the beauty of nature will never cease to amaze me.

This all sounds very mechanical and materialist...

If all one can do by being alive is just to move different parts of one's body at different times (for instance, choosing to move a finger when it happens to be touching the shutter of a camera), then yes, what is the point in thinking about anything, what's the point of art, music, philosophy, literature or even emotions? What's the point in being alive? Why not just become a photo-taking robot?

Hi Onyo, Bob and others.

Likewise, I've suddenly acquired a spattering of 2/2 ratings that cannot be traced to ratings on any individual photo.

Although I was quite riled by this and suspected foul play, reading Bob's answers has helped me realise that maybe I was taking all this a little too seriously!

Cheers, Hugo

That's very dark humour indeed - having fun whilst shooting kids!

Dear other photo.net users,

I agree that it's nice to comment where possible but the way the "rate recent" bit of the site is organised it's all too easy to skip through many photos rating each without leaving a detailed explanation for the rating.

I've recently received an insulting message on my portfolio just because I rated a certain person's photo 3/3 without leaving a comment. I've received that rating myself without comments and didn't think it was a bad thing - people are entitled to their opinions and may not have time or inclination to explain themselves. I am now concerned about the amount of bad feeling that the rating system can generate in some people and the way that this negativity can sour people's experience of photo.net.

Best wishes to all,
