Ann,
Please keep us posted who you find to repair it.

Nikon. But I shot some Porta 400 NC a month ago and I got some really good color. I fail to understand why you lost the color with the Porta. Maybe something is getting lost in translation?

Regarding the film advance getting stuck, keep in mind the lens must be locked in the out position for the shutter and film advance to work.
These are fun little cameras. I started using mine again with 400 speed. I will probably keep an eye open for another. No, it is not a cron or top Nikon glass but it serves a purpose, a fun little camera you are not going to worry too much about. KEH usaully has some good examples for sale. I have the SE.
Have fun,
Steve

Save up and buy a 35mm cron. You won't be sorry and you will never look back.

Collecting is over in general. I sold off a lot of our general antiques several years back and I wish I had sold everything. It comes as no surprise high end cameras are slow sellers. Fear not, use your equipment and be happy you have it.

I never used a case before for any of my cameras but I must admit I like the Ever-ready for the M. I load it for the day and don't reload in the field. I use this camera differetnly than I do other cameras and I feel the case keeps it protected when I don't use it for several hours and it is a heck of a lot easier than a bigger bag.
I guess it all depends on what you are doing with the camera. Right now I might as well have the 35mm cron welded on to the body, that lens works very well with the M for me.

What is the best way to store button batteries for my M which I just bought but
won't use for several months?
Many thanks,
Steve

Can anyone tell us - Who made the glass blanks for the lenses? Did they pour/grind lenses in Canada or was all of this done in Germany? Did Schott always make the glass in Germany?

I was at an orchid show outside of Philly last week and the digi people were driving me nuts, they were taking pictures of "every" orchid. I guess you can do that when all you do is change a memory card.
Sad to say but out of well over 100 cameras I spotted only two other film users. Mainly point an shoot digi but also some pretty fancy shooters as well. One of these saw my Leica and commented he used to use one years ago but was now using Canon digital. Heck he even showed me a tilt lens he uses with the Canon. I came home and looked up the lens on B&H and I must admit I could use that for architecture work.
Gosh I hope film is around for my lifetime.

Charles, most excellent!, thanks for sharing.

Mark, that is one of the best posts I have seen in a very long time. But I think we will see the Leica digital clone for 2500 in the next few years and it will offer more than 10MP. If Zeiss were really on the ball they would run with this one. They could come out with a new upgraded model every few years and many of us would buy it, I know I would buy one. Don't get me wrong, I love Leica but 5k for a body is just too much for me.

Number one is certainly a keeper, I really like the composition. I would not not look at these as failures. You certainly know how to compose a picture.

20,000 feet is a heck of a drop. Are you sure it was not in a pilot's pocket with a parachute attached to the pilot?

Very nice, thanks for sharing.

Good shots, thanks for sharing.

I may be wrong but it is my guess the glass for both was made by Schott in Germany. Can anyone confirm this.

M8.02 ?? You have got to love this.

Luigi, I think you are correct. Prices are getting so high it is becoming difficult if not impossible for many of us users to buy new equipment so we are just holding on to what we have. I know I wish I had bought a 75 Cron. a while back. With all the digital hype right now I am just using what I have. Digital has me worried because it costs so darn much money to do it right.

I think you are realistic. I hope the M8 is a success as well. It is too bad it is out of the reach for many of use price wise. I was hoping it would cost less but at 5K my forlay into digital will be something else, probably a Panasonic.
-
Why it the M8 so expensive?
Taking into account we can buy a good digital for "considerably" less than 5K
why is the M8 almost 5K? Is this actual product we are buying or product
hype. Why can't someone build us a good digital body for our M lenses for 1
or 2K? Don't get me wrong I love Leica but this just seems excessive.
Regards to all,
Steve

Sure, everyone is going to run out and spend 5K on a camera body and another 2K on a computer powerful enough to run the new software and another 1K on the software and another 2K on a printer. Let me add that up - 10K to go digital and if things go the way they have been going with electronics I can throw all that away in 5 years and buy an entire new set. Gosh, is film dead??
-
Sure "some" Leica fans are going to buy the M8 but I don't see the Leica cult following jumping on a digital treadmill.

I agree with Al, HCB's work was all about composition and content.
From what I have read he never developed or printed his own film, he would just turn the rolls over to an assistant when he returned from a trip. If he were active today I have little doubt he would be using a small quality digital and electronically transfering his work from the field or just turning in memory cards upon his return.

Joel,
Not to hi-jack this thread but can you give us some guidance regarding a print and monitor calibrator?
Thanks,
Steve
