1.
I tested the AFS 24-70mm against a new AiS 24/2.8 (which I love on the D700) and the AFD 28-105mm. Not only the contrast and color rendering was much better for me. The sharpness already wide open is stunning. It is really sharp from the outmost edge on.

The Ais 24mm and the AFD 28-105 (in the corresponding range from 24-70mm) are soft here and will reach the sharpness of the AFS 24-70mm starting from 5.6 on.

All in all:
The sharpness of the AFS 24-70mm was the most impressive thing for me.

  2.
As Bjorn already mentioned the 50-135mm/3.5 is an unnoted and overlooked lens by many people. The same happened to the AiS 28-50mm/3.5.
For me both lenses are really gems especially on the D700.

  3. I had two samples of this lens. Both samples were in mint condition but both lenses had this creeping behaviour.

Ask the seller for the condition of the lens and ask yourself if it will be a problem for you.

Optically this lens is very good (at least my 2 samples). At f/5.6...16 almost comparable to my AiS 135/2.8.

    best regards

  4. I had 2 examples of the 85/2.0 in the AiS version. Sorry, but my experience is that you have to stop down this lens at least two stops to get quality images. Lifeless and dull are the right words fot describing the performance wide open.

    It's just my experience.

  5. To continue the experiences:

I use the 105/1.8, the 50-135/3.5, the 100-300/5.6 and the 80-200/4.0 (all Ais) with the D70 and all of the lenses are great.

Especially the 105/1.8 and 50-135/3.5 are tack sharp with no CA visible. I love the feeling of the MF-Nikkors although you need a little time to get great results (i.e. accurate focussing and metering).

  6. Hi,

many thanks for your help and your link. I just received the lens. For 125 Euro I got a mint lens (it's like a new one). Now I have to go for test shootings. As soon as I have some results, I will give you a short opinion about the performance.

  7. Neil,

thanks for your reply. A week ago I bought a Nikkor 50-135/3.5 in a very good condition and... I love it.

Already wide open the results are excellent on the D70. I know about the manual metering, but with a little bit of exercise you can get quality pictures.

So I will buy the 100-300 and hope for a good optical quality (mechanically the MF-Nikkkors are unimpeachablein in any case).

  8. Hello,

there is an offer to buy this lens for 125 Euro (abt $150) in a mint

    (A) condition. I want to mount this lens on my F3HP and/or D70. Are

there any experiences with this lens (I could find only very little

information about the performance of this lens).

I'd be very grateful for any comments.

  9. Mick:

Exactly the same happens to me. My 35-70 AF-D on the D70 was very "greasy" (but no unsharp) at 2.8 to 5.6. Like a soft-filter on top of the lens. It seems to be a common problem with the 35-70. Anyway, another 35-70 (without "D") was nearly perfect.
