I had the newer 1.4 APO extender but sold it. Didnot find any difference to the older one. Will be going home soon. Will test and let you know.

Hi Stuart, wasnt aware that there were several versions to the 180F2.8 APO elmarit. I have one and can test it out with my old 1.4 apo extender (its the one that was made for the older 280F2.8 apo telyt). What is the serial number of your 180?
Cheers,

Hi Ray,
If you trying to compare the 90 + 2x APO with the 180F2.8 APO then I am quite sure the 180F2.8 APO is better in handling and of course dont forget the the one stop difference so focusing is easier etc. Also the 180 F2.8 is using internal focusing. The 180F2.8 and the 180F2 are two of the best lenses in the Leica R range. Let me see if I can take some pix with the lenses mounted on a Canon DSLR and sent them to you.

Hi Ray,
Just tried mine. Works very well and at F4 its still bright enough to use a split screen. From
the screen, the images looks sharp. Havent tried it on film yet though. Hope that helps.

One correction on my observation. The rear lens element comes out further as you focus
towards infinity not the other way around. From experience, normal lenses to telephoto
works the best. My 35 Summilux and 19 Elmarit, 15 super elmar all have problems with
the I series EOS.

Hi John,
I have used mine on a Canon 1DMkII without problems. I am using a Novoflex adapter.
With lens that protrude to far in to the camera, you will notice two things.
You will find that the lens becomes very stiff to focus as you move towards the closer
distances. The reason for this is that the lens element moves out more as the focusing
distance gets closer. So the stiff is due to the fact that the lens element is touching the
mirror. Second is that I get an error message on the 1DMkII as the mirror is blocked from
moving. Hope that helps.

Hi guys, thanks for the replies. I checked the leice website as well and found that Leica
stated there is a internal front filter. The front element looks flat to me so it might be true.
Still, I cant imagine the cost of replacing that internal filter!
I was out hunting for the discontinued 100mm Olympus UV filter as well. Saw it on a US
site, I think its focus camera. Went back the next day and its sold. Still looking. That
100mm filter is probably very rare. You are fortunate to have it.

Hi,
Has anyone tried mounting a filter in front of a Leica R 180
Summicron? The size is an odd one- 100mm. The lens also takes series 6
filters at the back. I am thinking of protecting the large front
element as I will be taking it out to some rough places. Olympus used
to make 100mm UV filters for their 180F2. Thanks in advance.
Cheers,
Paul
How does one tell if a 180mm f/2.8 APO is capable of using the 1.4x extender?

Hi Stuart,
Just checked. My serial number is 3897XXX. Had a close look. I dont think I should test it
out. The clearance seems to darn close! Maybe we could check with Leica.

Paul
