I am not sure about tft/lcd monitors but calibration is usually the reason why images look dark in some computers. And most people recommend using CRT monitor for serious imaging work.

If you have photoshop, you can use Adobe Gamma Tool for calibration. In windows, it can be opened from control panel.

I like Ken Rockwell and Luminous Landscape too. Most of my learning happened via Luminous Landscape and while I am writing this, I am reading something at LL on another browser wondow.
