  1. I have a 30D and leave it in a case for days with the battery installed.

After 5 months I have not had any problems.

My question to Joe is how did you resolve the problem?

What did you do to fix it since its happened multiple times.

Perhaps you have a bad battery, next time it happens use a multimeter

and check the battery before you charge it.

I like my 30D, but batteries are the bane of my life.

I have a great Canon HI8 camcorder with 3 batteries which will not hold a charge for more than a day.

  2. Well here is some interesting information. The first report mentions a guy in CA getting the Attorney General involved. These are all recent complaints and there are a lot of them.

    http://www.rebatereportcard.com/rebateratings/reportsearch.php?companyname=Canon

    >>All necessary rebate information was sent. Rebate fulfillment stated the UPC was not received all though it was sent with the forms. Reponses from the rebate fulfillment center took between four and five weeks each and still no rebate as of April 24, 2006.<<

    Looks like a pattern.

  3. I'm resolving an underpayment with Canon rebate program right now. One of three rebates were disallowed because of no receipt even though it was on the same receipt. I'm waiting on two checks. But I have a big problem with 300-400 dollar over payments. Good luck for a few but it shows a bigger problem. Handing out large over payments and making others jump through hoops to get $30 is bad for everyone. Lets face it, the money handed out eventually goes against Canon's bottom line costs and is factored into the price of the next camera you buy. This is not supposed to be run like a lottery.
  4. I supplied everything in triplicate. I see on their website that they are

still processing my rebate but have disallowed one of the rebates due to no receipt. I bought both items from B&H ( I recommend them ) and the receipt shows both items on the SAME receipt.

CANON Attention: I'm a 30 year buyer of your equipment, but I have a problem with your rebate program. Don't cheat me out of .10 cents deliberately because I will sell the lot and do business elsewhere.

  5. I just shot 3 picts in low light with a 30D and a 17-85mm IS all of the same scene outdoor scene. 1 was at 5.6 1/10 and 2 more at 5.6 and 1/8.

I'm 55 and I used to have a steady hand ( used to ). I shot three hoping to get one good one. They all came out rather sharp except for some depth of field issues ( 5.6).

I went out and shot another pict the next day with a tripod. It really didn't look any better.

    That concludes my IS test.

  6. I don't have an answer but this is my plan. Unlike other digital cameras that I paid $3-400 for I have decided I WILL learn each an every adjustment for my new 30D. I try to take it out every day and focus on one or two things. The manual isn't great but you can find what you need.

Today in low light I was determined to adjust the ISO and failed because I wasn't in the Creative mode on the dial. I did succeed in learning how to adjust the F stop and shutter speed by placing it in the manual mode and reading the manual found the right dials. It was actually fun playing with the F stops and shutter speed and watching the light meter move.

Tomorrow I'm going to tackle the auto focus adjustments. I'll read the manual and try various settings. Learn something every day and have fun.

  7. Well the day arrived.... I read the Canon 30D manual carefully....even read the

Sandisk manual (?) I carefully followed all the instructions as this was my

first DSLR and I knew I had to be careful....I slipped the battery charger out

on Christmas eve and was all set.

Finally I was ready for the first picture. My wife opening her presents....

Bonk! Error 05 the flash was blocked .. turn the camera off.. which I did

    repeatedly to no avail.

I had literally blown it.. The Wife tried to help... 30+ years of photography

    down the drain.

Finally I took out the battery and reinstalled and shazaam the 30D came to life

    and started taking pictures.....

    Is it always like this?

Where is my D76 developer? where's my film hangers? :)

  8. I bought 2 Sony XBR CRT HD TVs. I was a part of a very active forum avforum. On that site there was an open thread about problems with the TVs. Threre were negative comment from a sizable percentage of posters.

Both my TVs are perfect, I don't have any reason to post to that thread.

I'm not interested because I have no issues. Could that be an indication of the validity of a forum?

  9. Well here's some advice from someone with NO DSLR experience. But I have a 30D sitting under the tree with two lens. I also read everything possible and my head started to explode. I stopped and did a weeks worth of pondering the info. Here are some important conclusions I reached:

-DSLR bodies will constantly be improving so buy what you need now and be prepared to trade up.

    - Lens cost more than bodies ( in general ) so buy good lens.

    - Get something going now and learn, or sit on the sidelines.

I bought a 30D I was going to buy an XTi but thought the 30D would be a bit more rugged.

    - I bought a 300 f2 L IS that will fir 1.6 or FF ( safe investment )

    - I bought a 17-55 2.8 ef-s that will not fit a FF. Why? well I felt it was the best matchup for the 1.6 body. In the future I will have the 30D with a decent lens as a backup. ( I have a Ae1 A1 F1 manual body and I do use them )

After the 25th I will at least be shooting with a 2.8 in low light and shooting 300mm with an L lens.

This setup is a bit over budjet but perhaps the 17-85mm IS could be substituted.

I needed to do something to move forward. I was tired of having my negatives lost or botched.

Hope this helps from another new guy with 30+ years experience.

  10. Henrik, after spending another 6 hours I'm taking your advice as well as everyone's before.

I have a 1.6 and I want to get going and learn this new format. I do have extensive manual background and will make up a cheat sheet on depth of field for the zooms. I have a 30d and I'm going to enjoy it. Just like my A1 AE1 F1 and all the lenses I enjoyed ( and will continue to ).

It seems that software to correct deficiencies is key. ( barrel, vignetting CA ).

Lester, thanks for the links I learned a great deal.

Yakim, that fisheye ImageAlign is amazing.

Thanks again to all and Happy Holidays

  11. Wow! great replies. I've tried to read everything available ( Bob Atkin's reviews were very helpful ) but I'm still learning in big increments. Yes I now understand the FF advantage in the wide range. Makes perfect sense. The cost of the FF bodies held me back. In the mid-range I should have said 24-70mm L, which looks attractive.

I was trying to purchase lens for the 30D that could later be used on a FF. But the repeated positive mention of the EF 10-22 is encouraging. I should just work with what works for now. I do need to Zoom into the new millennium :). I'm just trying to catch up before I'm shopping for a camera bag that attaches to my walker :). I'm still reading these replies and I thank you all very much.

  12. I'm moving from Canon FD to Digital and I've purchased a 30d.

I thought I could apply 30 years of experience to this but I was

confounded by the lack of short focal length prime lenses.

My approach to digital was straight forward. I like to be able to shoot anything.

    Get a good prime wide angle like a 16-17mm ( 26-28mm 35mm equiv) ,

    a decent mid-range zoom 20-85mm zoom and a decent prime telephoto 300 mm f4L.

It was easy to find the last two lens but I can't find a decent wide angle.

I really don't want a wide zoom, never used one with 35mm film cameras.

I'm looking for a decent prime wide angle 16-17mm.

    Any thoughts?
