1.
Hi all,
I am looking into getting a lens in the region of +200mm for 4X5, I have a Shen Hao and a 90mm and 150mm so would like a lens with a bit more reach. I found these two lenses at a reasonable price and would like to hear any advice regarding which one to spring for. Would these lenses work fine on my Shen Hao? Lenses are:
FUJINON-W 250mm F6.3 CM Large Format Lens
SCHNEIDER SYMMAR-S 210mm F5.6 Multi-Coated
Thanks to all for your input, it is greatly appreciated.
2.
Congratulations Jim,
I just checked my results and have had my best year yet. One image made it to the finals and nine images made it to the semi finals, out of 20 entered.

For those that entered I recieved an email from Veolia stating I was not shortlisted as a winner and could log in to the website to see my results. Nice to get so far but would ultimately like to see one of my images in the book.

Still there's always next year. Just another excuse to go out and burn some pixels.

  3.
Hi Alan,

I just got back from Jasper on Sunday and some of the leaves were just strating to turn, most were still green though, as long as the weather stays warm they should still be on the trees at the end of September. Darwin Wiggett's book will help you out a lot, but obviuosly you can't go everywhere.
In Banff, Vermillion Lakes for sunrise/ sunset, as Jim said Moraine Lake (if the road is still open) anywhere along HWY 93 north to Jasper is awesome, stop at Peyto Lake, Athabasca Glacier (best view from Wilcox Pass trail), Tangle Falls. Athabasca Falls had a lot of water flowing last week so it should still be good. Maligne Lake in Jasper has lots of photo potential and Maligne Lake at sunset. Wildlife can turn up anywhere at any time so always be prepared. Patricia Lake in Jasper has a nice view towards Pyramid Mtn and a 'saddle' of Aspen trees hat turn golden in the fall, hopefully you will time it right. If the road is still open, head up to Mt Edith Cavell for one of the best views in Jasper (see Darwin's book).
Link to my portfolio, most shots are from the Rocky Mtns http://www.photo.net/photos/Paul%20H
Have fun!
Paul

Here is a shot from Mt Edith Cavell, it is on the cover of a Jasper map for 2009/10

00USEO-171459884.jpg.dead19c2f57689a9ffe0329de1f3ef6f.jpg

  4.
Alvin,
I visited the Highland Wildlife Park approx. 3 years ago in winter. Although it was damp and overcast it wasn't so cold that I or my partner needed to bundle up, no issue with the cold and camera batteries either. Your biggest issue will be the fencing. As I remember the animals are in enclosures with tight fencing around, you will have to be right uptight against the fence except for the auto route, try to get there as early as possible as they feed the animals (Red Deer, European Bison) in the morning and they will come close to your vehicle. Some of the enclosures for the smaller animals (Scottish Wildcat, Capercaillie) where very dark and difficult to get any sort of decent picture. But don't be dismayed I still got some good shots and it's still nice to see these animals that used to live in Scotland.
Shot from Highland Wildlife Park.
5.
Hi Michael,
I was at the lightrein factory/ showroom recently and ended up coming away with several hundred dollars of gear. I know many photographers who use their gear especially the egg crates for soft boxes. I got a couple of soft boxes and matching egg crates and a large C-stand. I mount them on White Lightnings but they can supply speed rings for almost any brand of light. The staff there are really friendly and will bend over backwards to make sure you come away satisfied. All the gear I saw and have seen is really well made and comes with a solid guarantee (6 years for soft boxes). As for their strobes, the owner said they are made, if I remember correctly in Korea but come with the Lightrein logo on and are fully servicible here in Canada. As you are in Canada they are a really good company to purchase from and you will not be paying any duty, bonus!
6.
Hi, does anybody have any recommendations for desk surface. I currently use the mouse that came with my Mac (the one with the tracker ball) and it is slowly removing the finish on my desk, consequently the cursor jumps around a lot. I have tried regular mouse mats, but was wondering if there is better surface to put on my desk, glass or plastic maybe? Thanks in advance.

  7. Hi all,

I have a potential new client asking me to give them a quote for shooting some of their buildings, five in total. Here is the info, client is an

architect, although not the biggest. The buildings are all out of town and would definitely require overnight stays in several towns and we

are located in Alberta, western Canada..

I have my day rate set at $600 but am not sure about pricing for gas, is it per litre or km, I believe the norm is like 30 cents a litre? These

buildings are located around the province and would require a lot of driving, and lodging, does the client pick up the tab for that 100% or a

    portion of?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

  8. What sort of satisfaction do you get from hiking with all your camera gear to a certain location and taking a picture that say Ansel Adams took. Why not save the effort and just take a photograph of his photograph, surely you can tweak it a bit in PS to make it your own! Also just going to a location to copy someone else's work is basically plagiarism, taking their shots is borderline copyright infringement.

Sure visit these 'famous' sites but look for a new angle, a new perspective. If everybody copies what has gone before, then photography will not develop (pun intended) and move on.

    My two cents

  9. Hi John,

I have had my Shen Hao for about 2 years now and it has served me well. I have used it in plus 30 to minus 30 and it hasn't let me down. It was a bit stiff in the extreme cold but what isn't. I have been happy with the build and the ease of use, I haven't had any issues with tightening it down, or it working loose. I'm sure if you wanted to spend more than double on say an Ebony then you would notice a difference. You won't be disapointed if you go with a Shen Hao especially for the price.

  10. Hi all,

I am looking for a supplier in Canada of digital wedding albums. We can do all

the layout etc, just need a printer. I remember looking up a company in

Vancouver, but the name escapes me, anybody know? Also does anyone have any

experience with Design Art Albums or PictoBooks?

Any info will help loads, thank you to everyone.

  11. Hi all,

I photographed this finch in the Rocky Mountains, In Alberta recently. It was

with a large flock of Gray Crowned Rosy Finches. Looking at it, it has red

patches where the regular finches have black, pink legs etc. Is this an albino,

it certainly stood out amongst the other birds and could be seen from a great

    distance against the trees.

    Thanks.

  12. Not sure about all retailers but I know of one photographer who has one picture for sale at IKEA and I believe they found by reputation. He had years of published images and is known for his style. So I think a researcher at IKEA liked his work and then they fleshed out a deal. If you look at some (not all) pictures at IKEA they have the photographers name on. Contacting the photographer in question may lead to a better answer.

Perhaps some are stock images, they look very generic and stock like to me, others will be sourced by photo researchers. In the UK I know Lee Frost has sold to stores for mass produced pictures. In the end I think a lot will depend on reputation and having the right picture at the right time.

  13. Also look in to Jack Dykinga's book, 'Large Format Nature Photography'. It's more basic than Simmons' but still a good easy read. Movements are explained very well with lots of pictures. There is a book by Leslie Strobel (I think that's right), it is very technical and a lot thicker than the others but for information you can't go wrong with it, sorry I can't remember the title.

Also try this link, lots of good info here:

    Enjoy your new camera.

  14. Hi Julie. I have had this lens for 4 years now and have been totally happy with it.

Beware however that it is a little soft when used wide open at 400mm, I always if light permits stop down to f8 and the images are very sharp. The push pull design of the zoom tends to suck in dust, the inside elements on mine have visible dust on them, but I have not seen any reduction in image quality. Also when used on a tripod the image on mine will 'track' move so IS must be turned off, please note I got mine early and I believe the newer models have improved IS that doesn't track.

Don't let this put you off this is a very good lens, I've taken mine out in rain, snow, -30 celcius and travelled Europe for 5mths and have never had a problem with it.

I would recommend this lens to anyone, good range and very useful.

  15. Have a look at Underwater Kinetics http://www.uwkinetics.com/home.php

Their cases are similar to Pelican but lighter plastic, tougher than Pelican, they are taken to the Oil Fields here in Alberta, Canada, so they get banged about a lot. I visited their showroom recently and was impressed by the quality and range, you can get different 'foams/ padding' for the inside.

They also carry a line of cases made in Italy which are also very good too.

Both brands are cheaper than Pelican, I priced one at $200.00 Canadian and the equivalent Pelican was just over $300.00 Canadian. Well worth looking at.

I recently got a Shen Hao and must say I am very pleased with it, as for lenses I use a

90mm and a 150mm. The 150mm probably gets used the most and is probably the better

lens for portraits (being roughly 50mm in 35mm terms) but will probably be too tight for

interior shots (if you're shooting the room). With the 90mm you don't get much movement

and unless you get a fast lens the image can be quite dark on the ground glass. I'd say go

with a 150mm first and if you require wider then get a 90mm.

Keep a look out, excellent lenses can be purchased second hand for a fraction of retail

    value. My two cents.

  17. Hi all,

I was hoping someone can help me with this problem.

I have a 1DMKII that I don't want to connect directly to the power pack, Speedotron

D1402, the problem is the power pack has a two prong synch connector so I couldn't get

pocket wizards for remote firing. After some fiddling my local camera store suggested this

set up, my 550EX in the hot shoe with peanut slave in front of flash so that theoretically

the peanut slave should fire the studio lights when it has picked up the light from the

flash, but all I am getting is ambient light recorded on my sensor. I've tried first and

second curtain sych and a variety of shutter speeds. Does anyone have any suggestions?

By the way the lights work fine with 4X5 it's just the digital camera?
