  1. Patrick, have you tried disassembling your 545i? I recently purchased

my 545i (new & from B&H) and after several non exposures found an old

metal clip inside the bottom which prevented the unit from properly

grabbing the clip on the film envelope.

Obviously your getting exposures, but maybe one or more of the springs

which tension the film envelope is misaligned, etc. Wouldn't hurt to

    investigate, good luck.

  2. I received my new Polaroid 545i film holder today and spent the afternoon trying it out. I used Type 52 film and the first three exposures were terrible. The film was completely black. Did the usually checks during the first & second exposures, lens closed, shutter cocked, etc. All was correct.

Took film back as the expiration date had come and gone on the box. Was given another box of Type 52 and the first exposure the same thing, all black. I was getting thoroughly pissed at this point.

Disassembled the film holder and found a metal clip from where I don't know inside the film holder. Reassembled holder and attempted to insert film (with holder out of camera this time) into holder. I heard and saw the retainer click as it engaged the film packet metal clip. All is well now. Polaroid gets a goose egg for QA.

I'd just thought I'd pass this along as a learning experience. Hope others don't have the same problem, but it's not a bad idea to open the holder. might be surprised at what others left behind.

  3. Has anyone modified a Graphic back for a Burke & James or an Old Calumet 4X5 with a Graphic back (rotates 360 degrees). The current spring apparatus is marginal at best. Can these backs be converted into a Graphlok back? I'd like to simplify the back and at the same time keep the ground glass true and aligned. Any ideas or info greatly appreciated, thank you & happy thanksgiving!
  4. Just purchased a rollfilm holder for $25.00. It looks pretty old but it seems to have everything in place and in working order. It's a Calumet Roll Holder model C2. Is anyone familiar with these? I suppose it could use some cleaning up but hopefully it will work. It's 2 1/4 X 2 3/4 inch size. Any info greatly appreciated.
  5. I've got a B&J 4X5 Orbit mono-rail with a rotating Graphic back. There are strips (three) of black velvet-like material that are on the bottom and either side of the Graphic back where the plate holding the ground glass mates to the other half of the back (when film holder is not inserted). Apparently there to provide a light tight seal.

Anyway, mine are worn and prevent the plate holding the ground glass from seating solidly on the left side (the plate can be rocked by pushing on the upper left corner).

Where can I fine this tight of light seal material? Is there a better method I can use to seal these edges or do I need to seal the edges at all? Any assistance is greatly appreciated, thank you
