I have both 70-300 VR and 70-200 2.8 VR. 70-300 is the one I carry for a walk around lens in the woods. 70-200 is more for indoor events (I used to shoot Indian dance events on stage) and for my studio shoots.
Recently, on my visit to Alaska, I took the 70-200 with 1.7 TC since this combo is better than the 70-300 VR. I like the 70-300 for its weight but have to be careful to get good sharpness at the long end.

Nice review. I am also upgrading from my D300s and D810 is going to be my first FF DSLR. You have not said anything about how the view finder differs from the D300. Are they marginally different or it is another 'wow' factor?

I just came back from a similar tour about three weeks back. I started the cruise from Vancouver to Skagway and then land tour to Dawson City and finished up with Anchorage.
I carried my D300s with Sigma 24-105 as a walk around lens, Tokina 16-24 2.8, and 70-200 VR with 1.7TC for wildlife. Carrying the camera was not bad except the weight. The Tokina and the Sigma were most used and 70-200 with 1.7 TC was used only in the Tundra wildlife tour. I wish I had received the Tamron 150-600 which would have been the best for the Grizzlies we saw from the bus!
Some of my trip photos are here

Vacuum cleaner?
NEVER! Don't use house hold vacuum cleaners. It will generate a lot of static and will destroy the electronics.

Have you tried to reset the camera to factory default settings. Sometime it might fix the issue - worth the try.

Any one using Westcott Apollo RL3 especially with AB400? How is the
quality of the product and results?

While the longer focal length lenses are good, consider their closest focus distance as well. Since you said you can get closer some times, consider 50 1.4 or 50 1.8 too.
Though this one is not a marmoset, I am proud to capture it with 50 1.8D

May be you can order the part and fix it yourself. It does not look so bad! Get the part number from here...

Do you want to treat your SLR with Point & Shoot respect! I would not try to carry my DSLR with 80-200 or 70-200 attached to it using these straps.
-
I used ISO 400. WB set to 3200 and mostly used 85 1.8D and 50 1.8D. Most of the shots are made in A mode.
If your are interesed, visit this link.

Yes, I am trying to shoot with ambient light and avoid motion blur. But I also want to use fill flash so that the shadows on the face have some detail.
Did a concert shoot last week end. Out of 190 clicks, 45 turned usable(or viewable!) May be 20 can be printed after some PS.
-
Ok, So when I am shooting a concert - say a typical Indian dance with a mixture of colored lights, using a high speed sync is not going to help me get sharper image, right?
-
I currently own D100 and it has the max sync rate of 1/180. The D70
has 1/500 sec flash sync. So, is this going to get us sharper image?
When the shutter is set to 1/500, it is going to freez the action
right?
-
Lex, I like your shots, but I am getting harsher shadows than what you have - may be becuase of the ambient lighting condition.
-
I just bought a SB800 and when shooting in horizontal orientation, I
can tilt the flash head and get some nice shots. However, in vertical
orientation, how do I setup the flash head to avoid harsh shadows?
The shadows goes to the right (or left) and pretty harsh if the
subject is close to the wall.
Thanks

Get Nikon 50mm 1.8D or 50mm 1.4 and be prepared to amaze yourself. I do not know anything about 10D.

Jean, I am replacing the Sigma 28-80 because it is not a giving me sharp images. Moreover, I shoot lot of images without using flash and I needed a fast lens. My other choices are Sigma 280-70 2.8 or Tamron 20-75(?) 2.8.

Hi All,
Currently I own D100 with 50mm 1.8D, 70-300ED and Sigma 28-80 3.5-
5.6 (which came with my old N50). I am looking for replacing this
Sigma 28-80 with either Sigma 15-30 (for nice wide angle) or Nikon
24-120 VR for general purpose shots.
Do you think it is wise to use the 15-30 as the day to day lens or
is it better to go for 24-120 and buy the 15-30 later?
Please advice. Thanks a lot.

Are you sure you have not bumped up the EV compensation? As mentioned in the previous post, try cleaning the DX contacts. Does the camera display the correct film rating?
I have a N50 which I used it for almost 7 years and two weeks ago I bought D100 and my N50 is taking a rest. I do not know if I will ever use it :( May be I will finish all the film rolls sitting in the fridge).

Darrell,
Really nice shots. What kind of lenses do you use? I really like the details on the leaves. Did you do any post processing?
Thanks
Which would you choose between the Sigma 24-105/4 and the Nikon 24-120/4
