I would go with the d700. The viewfinder and depth of field alone make it worth it. Rent one for a weekend before you decide.

When i don't want the bulk of my SB600, I stick the SB400 on my camera. It has just enough power that the shadow is removed.

-
I would get a d80, one of the 80-200/2.8s and a 50 1.4
The d80 viewfinder is a big improvement over the d50.
-
The bokeh of the 1.4 is beautiful
-
I know my previous version of iPhoto (5 or 6)had problems when the databases become too large. Try opening a new library and see if it gives you the same problems.
-
-
The D80 is particular bad at preserving highlights. Meter the sky and or use exposure
compensation.

Thanks guys. I was about to buy the nikon 17-55. Then I found out that canon had one for
the same price pretty much that also had IS. That got me thinking about buying a canon body
also. That way I can pretty much buy whatever glass I want.
-
Does anyone shot both nikon and canon digital. I shoot nikon now (d50, 18-70, 50 1.4 and tokina 12-24).
I need a second body and can't decide whether to upgrade to a d80 and the 17-55 or to get a canon body
and the 17-55is. How much of a difference does the IS make. Any thoughts on canon bodies are also
appreciated.
