Great composition, your choice of a simplistic background is wonderful. I would have prefered to see the tip of the straw. Having the straw extend out of the frame divides the picture. Nick

I adjusted the brightness/contrast/shadows to make the background drop out (in order to do that the subject has to be well lit). It's is amazing what you can do with photoshop and I would recommend trying it out, albeit it does have a very steep learning curve. I bought photoshop elements (its a lot cheaper, a little toned down and more user friendly) and that is what I use. I appreciate the commentary.

I think this is an excellent shot. Great light and focus, but I think the shallow DOF really makes this shot (and adds to the impression of the flower bursting forth). Don't be discouraged by the low ratings, I don't understand how people rate photos on this site sometimes. -Nick

Great shot, very pleasing and original. I like how the flower fades off into the darkness. However would also like to see the tip flower a little brighter. If you saturate the colors a little or tweak the brightness/contrast a little that may help. -Nick
  1. This shot was taken in the late afternoon with a white piece of paper behind the flower, which gave me the nice lighting. To get the black background I cheated and used photoshop. With the white paper against the background it was easy to burn the background out. Attached is the original. -Nick

I appreciate the commentary. As for shooting into the sun, I don't think it harms the matrix (its only open for a fraction of a second anyway). I haven't done any research on it, but I do a fair amount of shooting into the sun so I'll tell you if I run into any trouble.

I used photoshop elements. I made it a B&W then increased the red midtones and decreased the blue midtones.

Wonderful shot. The midday lighting is a bit harsh, I think this picture could be improved by taking the same shot around sunrise or sunset.
