1. Hello!

I'm trying to lock in a scanning workflow for B/W 35mm and I've had such a love/hate relationship with my Coolscan 5000 and Vuescan. The detail extracted is second to none, but I'm seeing EVERY flaw as well. There are hairline surface scratches that explode on the screen from these scans that are nowhere to be found on a mirrorless camera scan or a darkroom print.

Is this just inherent to the scanning physics? Is it scanning the surface and therefore every film base scratch is seen? Again, if you backlight the negative, all of these tiny scratches are invisible. Hence why they don't show up in camera scans or darkroom prints.

    Any ideas?

  2.
As for the checked luggage thing, I've had a mini-DV tape smashed in my checked luggage. It was in its plastic case. At the bottom of the suitcase. Under 2 weeks worth of clothes. Against the rigid back of the suitcase. Surrounded by rigid sides. Something somewhat pointed must have struck the suitcase on the lid and had the force to push through all the clothes and strike the cassette case hard enough to shatter the case and smash the tape within. Luckily it was a blank tape, but after seeing that, I have never checked anything of value no matter how well padded. These guys have god-like powers that defy physics to destroy items in luggage.

  3. There IS something to them. I bought a used M6 ($1100) and a used 50mm f1.4 sumilux (the last non-asph version for $900). Absolutely gorgeous rendering of light. The first shot I took of my sister with that lens on Porta film resulted in her saying "I want every picture of me from now on taken with that lens." I have since bought the 75mm Summicron. That being said, though, I have the 35mm 1.7 Voightlander and their f1.9 28mm. This set up gets me by quite nicely while I lurk for good deals on newer or classic Leica lenses to integrate.
  4. Hi David

I just ordered one of Dell's super deals on computers.... and it comes with the 1905 (can't order it w/o monitor). So, I'll give you my impressions. I asked a very similar question a couple days ago...

Since I'm forced to get the LCD, I'll use it for menus and get a 19" CRT for images.... I'm looking at a Viewsonic for $300. Seems to be good... no more Trinitrons or Diamondtrons are being made any more....

  5. Once again, thanks for the advice...

"BTW, I think you will find that Sony still make CRT's for graphics use."

Nope. They cancelled Trinitron Production except for the Artisen.... which I can't even find on their website anymore. Seems like most manufacturers are going to LCD.... makes sense, Why keep an assembly line open to a product that only is desirable to a select few individuals?

Looking at the 22" LaCie... still a bit big and expensive. There are a few on Ebay, but once again who knows how old they are....

  6. I was hearing from several sites (such as the Will Crocket site) that anything under 10 bit isn't up to par with CRT's. The ColorEdge 19" is $1700. The 22" is $2700.

    Now.....

I'm all ears about being talked out of CRT: Has anyone been suprised with their TFT monitor matching to prints? I'd love to hear about a skeptic being converted by seeing their r2400 spitting out perfectly matching tones from a $400 TFT. If so, I'll jump.

I'm looking into the Samsungs... heard they are nice. 10 bit seems holy grail, but if most everything (in the cheap dept) is 6 bit then 8 bit might be a happy place for me....

Thank you for any and all advice!

  7. I'm looking to build a new computer system (pc) and really want to

stay with a CRT monitor (can't afford the $1700 it takes to get a

good LCD). I'd love to get the 19" LaCie or its NEC/Mitsu

equivelant, but it looks like none are available anymore (even the

LaCie refubs.) The NEC 19" CRT available is a Multisync.... not the

Diamondtron anymore. They state it's pretty general-purpose (non-

    aperture grill).

Does anyone make an aperture-grill CRT in 19" anymore? I don't

quite have the room or budget for the LaCie 22".

    thanks!

    -George
