Mine (70-200 F4 IS)is about 6 months old and is noisy, very noisy compared to 24-105L IS and 300f4L IS, but I figure I know it's working :-)

Thanks everybody for your help, that's what is good about this little group. Will hang on to my 85.

I have an 85mm f1.8 lens (which I love) but I seem to get a lot of C A (purple fringing), I am getting really annoyed with this "feature" so I am thinking about changing to a 100mm f2, so if any 100mm f2 users want to comment, please do so. I had this problem on my 20D and when I upgraded to a 40D I thought it might lessen (or go away!) but it didn't, so any comments would be really appreciated. And no, I don't want to fix it in software.
Many thanks,
Another vote for the 200mm f2.8 L lens, I looked around and tried both the 70-300 DO (soft) and the 70-200 (very nice, but BIG and WHITE) on my 20D, bought the 200 2.8L and am very happy (and it's black!). Phil.

I also had to make that decision, I went 24-105 in the end as I prefered the lighter and smaller lens. IS is really great and the extra 35mm reach is very handy. The f2.8 over the f4 is no big deal, the IS more than compensates for it. Hopes this helps. Oh BTW I am using mine on a 20D. Phil.

I often travel into Sydney and the only lens I take with me is my 24-105L IS, It covers most things, admittedly I sometimes wish it was longer (or shorter) but for one lens that covers 95% of situations and ease of use it's great. And I use my 50mm f1.4 for low light situations. Phil.

Well I had a 50mm f1.8 mkII and while I liked the picture quality had no confidence in the "build" and eventually sold it and bought a 50mm f1.4 and love it (see some of my pics (dpb004)), then I saw a 50mm f1.8 mkI on ebay and bought it, wow, what a difference in build between the mkI and mkII (and my condidence it won't fall apart), so my sugestion is either a mkI f1.8 or a f1.4. hope this helps.

Thanks guys, was just not sure if it was some "macro" option or not, but the focus switch is quite logical when you think of it, I just didn't think. Thanks again.

Have just bought a new 200mm f2.8L II lens and I am courious why there
are 2 settings for focusing distance on this lens (1.5m to inf and
3.5m to inf). Why not just have the 1.5m to inf and not have a switch
or is there some loss in quality using this mode?
Thanks for any info as none of the reviews seem to mention it.

I am travelling to Japan in 4 weeks for 4 weeks and will be visiting
all the Major cities (and tourist spots), was wondering if there are
any good (and cheap) shops that anybody can recommend to buy lenses
and photo junk (according to my wife!) and how does the prices compare
to Australia. Just got a 85mm f1.8 last night and wow it's sharp, paid
AU$610 (or about US$475) for a cost example.
Thanks,
Phil.

Just got a 20D myself (see 29th Jan), bought the body only and the 50mm f1.8 II plus got the 28-135 IS USM, just fell in love with the 50mm and am learning all about taking "photo's" again with it and the joy of using a "prime", am thinking of upgrading to a 50mm f1.4 and the 100mm f2 sometime down the track but for now just enjoying what I have and to quote Bob Atkins.....
EF 50/1.8 II
It's under $70, it's small, it's light, it's sharp and it's 2-3 stops faster than any of the zooms. What more can I say. Buy one. You won't regret it.

Thanks Christof, had a good giggle at the "movie" (what, no sound?), and thanks everybody else for their comments. have posted some pics taken with my "old" Sony 828 in "my portfolio" (Phils pics), have no idea how to direct anybody to see them, but have put one up for ctitique
Thanks again folks.

Folks, would like to thank you for all the info I gleaned off this
discussion group over the past 2 months.
Have sold my Sony 828 and bought a 20D with the 50mm 1.8 and the
28-135mm IS USM lens.
Will miss a few things about the Sony, like the movie mode and and
being able to "bend the body" but the quality of the pictures with no
more "purple fringing" and no more grain...wow!

I had a 5D mkII, mine had a "creaking CF door" and it drove me crazy as every time I held it, it felt "tinny" to the point I sold it and bought a 7D and am very happy now. No real difference in image quality, save money and get a 7D or wait for the 5D mkIII :-)
