Tough shot. Can we see some images with no flash? What's the natural light like? What was the focal point of this shot? Doesn't look like it's less than 35mm (x1.6).
The DRebel at 800 ISO is pretty noisy. I don't dial up my DRebel above 400.
I'd use the DRebel with the 50mm 1.8, on a solid tripod, with cable release. If you don't have a cable release, try using the handsfree device you use for your cell phone. If there's an answer/end button on your handsfree device, it will most likely work as a cable release for your DRebel.
Even if flash is allowed I would still only use it as a secondary source of light, and rely more on the natural light. If you're not metering for manual, use AV mode, dial camera to f1.8, and with flash in auto E-TTL, dial down about a full stop. Shoot raw, not jpg. Focus will be challenging.
Your concern seems to be that with the 50mm, you back away from the subject, thereby limiting the range of your flash. More ambient light will correct this.
I'd also recommend finding a different location. Next to a window, use a reflector. But I'm a sucker for this style of shot.
