Noli..you won't suffer any buyer's remorse with the 24-70mm. As well as build, the image quality is outstanding. On a D700 you'd be pleased. Examples of the 24-70mm here
Problems with this lens on a D3 is news to me. I use mine quite regularly and haven't come across this. All the shots in this gallery from a couple of months back were taken with a D3 and 70-200vr. Sun was quite bright and I didn't use a hood. I don't think flare/vignetting is a problem.

For those looking for one in the UK, the best option is to simply ring around the independent camera shops. I rang Greys of Westminster yesterday who had 2 in stock. Went straight away and picked it up...whilst there another chap came in enquiring and he bought the other one.

Bob,
How much did it cost and can you post a link please. I had a good look on the site but just can't find it.

I've had my CM for about 8 months and generally put a couple of rolls through ever month. I do recall experiencing one roll that wouldn't advance and I think the problem was the lead was too far past the marker. I'm sure if you stick to the marker in future you won't have a problem...its quite reliable.

you can also find it pretty deserted during the weekend and it does make for some pleasant shots

I recently lost my T3 and am looking to replace it. I'm seriously
considering the CM as a replacement but would be loathe to take a
backward step in regards to image quality. Can anyone with experience
of both cameras give an indication of their preference. I have had a
look at previous threads but can't find specific user opinions to
regards to the CM v T3. Advice most appreciated.

I took the LX3 with me on a recent holiday and used it everyday. It certainly replaces a high end film compact for me, say a T2 or T3, and a major advantage is that it is unobstrusive and you don't stand out. Best results from raw but jpegs are up to scratch as well. Output is more film like than digital.
All shots here taken with lx3
