  1. I like the divider inserts. My P1 case inserts are different from my other Pelican inserts. Currently the P1 case holds my Rollei with P20 on it and, if needed, a Metz set up. The foam pads both on the inside of the lid and at the bottom of case hold equipments quite well. This frees up space for my backpack or Pelicans to hold lenses. I have to say though the quality of the P1 cases cannot compare to those of the Pelicans.
  2. I use a P20 with my 6008AF and the back can only be used with Rollei. The back interfaces directly with a Rollei camera without the need for Rollei specific adapter. I have had experiences with Imacon back before and I have found when using P20 coupled with Phase One's own Capture One software the combination gives me greater flexibility over Imacon/Hasselblad's digital back and software solution. I find myself not really needing Photoshop editing for many of my none mission critical work.
  3. For those who ridicule software nerds may over look the possibility of software-aided image processing: from image design conceptualization, capture, all the way to finalizing the image(s). A complete digital work flow which includes the real digital robotic photographer! Whether it's a single image or the continuous motion of images. Actually, if the software is designed well, the robot (photographer) can interact with you more friendly without personal bias; instantly playback to you the various proof shots based on your preference to ensure the perfect image for your storage and retrieval uses. For those who operate large, extremely expensive medical imagining devices can attest to the fact that digital has already replcaced analogue films. With digital scanning, thousands of scans can be taken with a single process. Current trend is to upload this vast amount of digital images to places like India for analyses, because it's cheaper. The prospect of medical computer disgnoses is gradually on the long horizon. Digital imaging/scanning is 3-D and a lot more precise than film. In the end, there may be a totally different "format" of camera will exist, and software nerds may have a lot to do with what it is and how we are going to use it.
  4. I am pleased to learn that the new Hy6 will talk to the 6450 back, because I still have two of them now collecting dusts along with the many lenses I have nicely packed in my 3 Pelican cases. The digital advances will probably push digital photo be part of digital video in the not too distant future. Consumer hi-end video equipments will now let you shoot digital video and take still photos. The two may be stored on separate medium but the potential is there. DV may outlast LF, MF and 35mm. Unfortunately lenses are not easily interchangable.....
  5. Larry, one of the reasons you did not receive overwhelming endorsements on your statement/picture is you could have gotten better results. I believe it's not because of the hardware equipments. When shooting still objects you have more control of the environment, including the object itself. Using real flowers, for example, will bring better, a more realistic result. Even though using digital back may limit your ability on varying the lighting and aperture/shutter speed scenarios, but try that anyway. You are not wasting film here! Lastly, for flower arrangements, is it really important to achieve the "sharpest" image? Or, better information of the object (details, layers, etc.) is more desirable? Regards.
  6. I don't have the same setup as yours ( I have both an AF and a 6008I, and my Imacon 4040 only supports 6008I). Using the extension tube and Nikon flash are hurting the finish quality. Many of us like to use Metz, but really prefer studio lighting. On the other hand, I find your people shots are very nice. They showed both the top quality of Imacon 96C as well as the Schneider 180 lens. Good luck.
  7. I have used a number of lenses (40mm, 50mm, 55mm, 80mm, 90mm, 75/150mm, 150mm, 180mm and 300mm). For portraitures I like the 80mm, 90mm and the 75/150mm (on camera support). Personally I find medium format tele lenses too bulky. You are probably not going to realize a high cost/beneft yields on your investment. For the years I have my 300mm I used it only a couple of times. On the other hand, I really enjoy using the 90mm for people and fashion shots. In studio, I like to use the Schneider zoom lens, even during people shots. I prefer the zoom over the 180mm in studio. Good luck.
  8. Teaming up with PhaseOne is not really a breakthrough. PhaseOne's back is less desirable because Rollei is short changed in the Hasselblad/Imacon deal. Rollei does not have the resources to take over PhaseOne. Even if Rollei can line up the financing, it may still be late because Sinar's digital offering is also impressive and quite versatile. For the long run, Rollei nned to change its luck by lining up with a new chip maker that can develop full frame imaging at attractive costs. That, will be a real breakthrough and I'll drop my Imacon and get a full frame back for my AF!
  9. IMHO, it is desirable to encourage the debate of digital vs. non-digital. I have yet to come across a thread here dealing with the possible convergence of digital photography and digital cinemagraphy, at the pro-gear level-not the cheap video stuff. We all know this is not on the immediate horizon. But it may be here sooner than we expected. I, for one, added a Hasselblad digital back to my Rollei MF. It was kind of humiliating for a Rollei loyalist to compromise, but I enjoy so much of the ease of workflow. Let's hope the advance of time will bring in better affordabilities for all of us.
  10. If you have already invested very much into your MF and LF equipments, such as lenses, bodies, etc. then getting a digital back at a reasonable cost is probably a better choice. For your particular case, I would suggest getting a Hasselblad/Imacon back. However, 35mm DSLRs have a lot of benefits. They are very portable and quite capable, too.
  11. First of all, 35mm DSLR cameras are not the cure for all. It showed us its vast capabilities. The law of physics also limit its ability in selected fields such as high-end product, commercial and publishing industries, just to name a few, where high resolutions are mission critical. In these areas large format scan backs still rule. DSLRs are liked by many because they simplify photographers' workflow, whether they are pro or not. Computer-aided image capturing functions are giving the world of photography a transformation that is unprecedented. And the evolution is not settled yet.
  12. Erik, to get into MF at this time you'll need to be prepared to add either of the two possible accessories because the rest of the world is turning digital. You'll need a very good scanner, preferably a dedicated film scanner that handles MF films. Or, you may find yourself down the road needing a digital back. Hasselblad teamed up with Imacon so it has a secured source for extending its life in the digital future. Rollei is yet to let us know how it is go to survive. After invested extensively into Rollei gears, I added one Polariod Sprintscan 120 so that I could convert film images into digital media. Now I am using digital back because I need to extend the life of my Rollei MF investment, and also because the digital back can provide results a lot faster. I had certainly gone a long way. When you embark on your MF journey, you need to know what you are possibly getting into..........
  13. The merger of Imacon and Hasselblad is troublesome for Rollei. I need an Imacon Rollei adapter and was told there is no or very little in stock. PhaseOne's digital back for Rollei is a fixed back which cannot be applied to other cameras. Third party digital solution for Rollei is very limited. On the other hand, the future for digital is ever so bright that one of these days (and sooner than we expect) we will no longer need expensive light meters, color meters and even camera filters! All that will be built in and automatically compensated by internal computer processing. To the mass, that means you're in control. To the pros, that could spell shrinking career prospectives!
