  1. Clearly, I'm not happy about this instance and people need to know about it. If a camera still funtions, it is absolutely their responsibility to tell you that fact, and they did not. Regardless of damage over time or warranty, the only way you can be fair to your customers is to explain the extent of damage and repairs when asked. I went as far as to talk with the very technicians that worked on my machine and no one ever, gave any indication that the camera still functioned fine and probably would for months, if not years to come. They sent me a repair bill for $2800 and at that point I bought another camera. If I take my car into the shop after an accident, I'm not paying the price of a new one just to fix something that MIGHT break at a later point.

It's their decision to warranty their work or not. No one is forcing them to. Anyone would rather have a working camera without warranty than have to buy a new one.

  2. I never asked them to warranty anything. All I wanted was a working camera and they assured me "IT DID NOT FUNCTION". They even asked if I wanted to have it back or not - and I actually considered saying no, but figured I might salvage parts. If I had said no, I would have lost a perfectly working 5D and been out $3000 and I would have never known otherwise. The camera has now worked fine for thousands more images and several months. This is does not sound to be the only instance of negligence at their facility either. I will certainly accept that this is the exception and not the rule, but I will not accept that they treated me fairly and honestly.

This nearly the only such instance of negligence at their facility either. 4. Let me just add that no one should trust the Canon service department.

I own two Canon 5D bodies. I dropped one in cool mountain stream earlier this year and was also told, after a three weeks at the Irvine repair facility, that the camera was beyond repair. They said they could do nothing at all and I needed to buy a replacement. Turns out, they are full of s**t. The camera worked beautifully once it dried out and I can never trust Canon again to provide me with accurate information based on this and all too many similar stories.

Sorry to hear about your camera and glad it seems to be working now. Hopefully any salt water damage won't prove to corrosive over time. The 5D and 1Ds2 are both great machines but I couldn't justify spending more than twice as much for just a few more MP's and a big, bulky body. However, if the 22mp rumors are true and Canon releases a Mk3 next year, I'd probably go for that. I'd just be cautious about sending it back in need of repair.
