  1. I have tried to do a unsucessful search through the threads. This same topic of discussion has come up before. As I recall, 3200 was somehow perceived or deemed as not being as acceptable and thus it is only accessible via Cfn 8.

Also read up on discussions of dark noise and bias noise by Bob Atkins and others. This perhaps may shed some reasoning behind why iso 3200 is as it is on the 20D.

If others can point out the correct thread, or elaborate better than I, please do- I am going by (foggy) memory! ;)

Oh! Some have described the use of Neat Image, Noise Ninja, and similar software in the past. You may want to investigate that as well if you are unfamilar with it.

    Good Luck,

    -Luis.

  2. Hmmm... In the image you submitted. If you do a histogram of the entire image- well you stated the outcome already. But if you do a histogram of a portion of the image you get another distribution.

So, I would say it is dependent on what you are intending to do in the shot. Keep in mind that your camera will likely give you a histogram of the entire sampled image.

Have you also considered the technique known as bracketing?

    Hope I make sense.

[if you do an experiment of this in Matlab, Octave, or your software of choice it makes more sense. But this may be beyond the scope of what you ask.]

    -Luis.

  3. Besides the previous suggestion by Jose Gil on using center weighted and partial, you better be mindful of your shutter speed- I say this because you mentioned you exclusively used Av mode. Most books I have read suggest 1/125 or faster if you hold your camera steady by hand. Then again, this may already be obvious to you and others.

I think Tom Musselman's comments are right on.
