I have shot both LF and FF digital, I use 5D Mark II with vertical grip and 24-70 F 2.8 and 70-200 F2.8 lenses. Believe me it does not weight less then a wooden field camera.
Secondly digital is expansive as you need to upgrade to new body every 3 year or so.
Medium format digital will not be in a reach of normal photographer in next 8 to 10 years. Whereas film MF was within the reach of amatures as well.
Weather one should use film or digital depands on the fact why he or she is doing photography. If it is just a profession and way to earn living, then go with the trend and use digital or whatever is convenient.
If it is about make images that lives even after you are gone, and are piece of fine art than I think one should choose film, better still medium format or Large Format.

I think you have taken right decision as when learning photography it is good to learn on film.
Quality of film is still ahead of digital.
secondly film scanner are getting better and cheaper.
Film equipment last lifetime whereas you have to invest in very expensive digital system every third or fourth year.
If some professional can earn enough from photography that he can update his digital equipment every secong or third year than question of film or developing cost does not arrise.
Creative satisfaction is supreme in film photography
Painting is still going great despite photography being around for more than century.
Keep shooting film as this will be regarded as fine art very soon

You are lucky Edmund that you started with digital photography. I started with analog photography some 7-8 year back.I learned shooting with negatives and was kind of experimenting with transprency. Boom came the digital SLR and I was again on learning curve , learning photoshop and other digital things.
I still consider myself luckier than those who perfacted analog photography after years of pratice, and now they are beginner again with kids like us.

I think that most high end dSLR are catching up with 35mm film.Yet post production consume your all spare time as you wish to edit everyshot of your.
This simply means that you devoting more time of your life on computer than photographing. If you like spending time on computer more that other things than Digital photography is for you,
otherwise good old days when you used to shoot and give your slides for developing and your result was with you within a few hours is something that is good idea.
If you add the cost of high end computer and sowtware too you will find film to be cheaper option.BTY medium format still can boast of superior quality to digital SLR.

I have vast experience in theatre photography. I would go for
Canon as Viberation reduction in other camera would allow you to use slow shutter speed. And it is not slow speed but proper exposer that you need. Since this is kid's Play you can aspect bright lighting. At 600 or 800 ASA you can hope to get nice exposer at F-4,shutter speed of 25 or 30. Sit tight and you can put your hands on armrest and make exposer of this kind very easily. Trade secret don't try to shoot while some character is speeking wait for him to pause between dialouge and release shutter right than. There is moment of stillness in most vigrous looking action. Just look for tham.
Fast lens is always boon yet what you have got will definately solve purpose. I personally don't use tripod with long lens as keeping track of subject becomes dificult. I guess your primary interest is in photographing your son performing yet try to include surounding as that will give real theatre effect. Don't forget to set white balance to tungsten lighting.

yes Michael it is indeed a 80-200mm AF-D lens sorry for confussion. Actually I was wondering why did Nikon design It this way that to repair something that is physically located outside and is not part of optical construction needs opening of lens elements. Moreover it could have been a ring with opening, so that replacing it was easy.

Hi friends
I found auto focus/manual focus selection ring of 80-200 AFS broken after
returning from my tour to himalya. On contacting nikon servicing center they
have told that for replacing it they will have to open the lens. They sure are
asking big sum for it $100/-which I might not have bothered had they done the
repair without opening the lens. Now is there any ohter way to fix it as gluing
it might be risky. Plz advice as I don't want my new lens to be opened. Thanks

hi friends
After using digital camera and PC for my photo editing needs now
I want to set up proper digital darkroom. I currently use Nikon D-100
camera, Coolscan 4000 ED nikon scanner, HP flatbad scanner and epson
stylus 2200 photo printer. My computer is P4 with 1 gigs RAM. You
might be wandering that with this kind of equipments do I still need
A proper darkroom.
Here are my problems
I don't have a back up system, I keep burning DVDs which I am not
able arange properly. Suggest me some good back up system.
Colour calibration of all these differant make equipments is somewhat
tiring at times and I never seems to get bang on target all the time.
Am I missing something from my list which is a must for digital
darkroom.
By the way I m using Photoshop CS for editing and money is not big
problem as long as it is less than 8k.
thanks in advance
