    Hello Jennifer,

as far as composition is concerned I like your photo, otherwise I would not comment on it. But I have some suggestions on the technical side. The reflections of the clouds and the waterplants are to likely in their grey tones, so they would seperat better with a slightly higher contrast. And the photo doesn't look sharp on my screen. Maybe just a question of post processing. Keep on. B&W is beautiful.

I like the photo how it is. The muted colours and the overall dark appearence adds very much to the mood and I can't see what more details should bring.

  1. The photo is a very good portrait and your decision to focus on the cigarette tip works well for me. But I don't understand what the story about this man should add to the photo. Why do you tell us this story? Why could he wanted you to know his story? What does it really tell us about him? Branded for the rest of his life? If he didn't tell you, you would never have known it and therefore he was not branded in your eyes. So is he a storyteller? Don't misunderstand me. I don't want to critizise you. I'm just asking.

Beautiful photo. The colour contrast between the dark red and the green tree is beautiful and the reflection adds an interessting counterpoint as it is not as clear as the tree itself.

I'm not sure about it, but I would try a very little cropping on the left, on the top and ground part of the photo. Just to give the composition some balance. But maybe this doesn't work.

    Congrats to this excellent shot.

  2. Certainly an eye-catcher. They act in a very friendly way, a pleasure to see. On the technical side some points to take care of. The highlights are blown and the trees in the background are distracting. A shallower dof would help. I also would try to not cut of the hands of the persons.

  3. Eyecatching shot! The composition with the three ships is very nice, also the colours and the sky. I would choose a slightly narrower crop, because the tall house on the left is distracting.

First of all, an eye catching portrait! Maybe it's only my monitor, but the skin tone on the forehead are blown out. And I would try to post the modell further away from the wall. The bricks are dominating a bit.

    Nevertheless nice shot.

    Cheers, Stefan

Strong photo! I like the b&w and the tight crop. Reminds me of Paul Strand's photos of his former wife Rebecca. You might want to google for this.

I won't rate your photo, because I came to the conclusion that the fixation on rateings isn't likely to result in better photos. Just have a look on the pages of the ones that rate you and see if you really want a good rateing from all of those fellow pn members.

But I'm willing to tell you what I think about your photo. I hardly ever take a closer look on nudes, because I find most of them boring. Your photo made me to take a closer look because of the older than average nude model (she's probably about my age). I think she deserves more space, so I would agree with Starvy that the cropping is too tight. And her pose is not really relaxed. I know this is not easy with amateur modells, but you might want to think about how you can create a relaxing atmosphere. Maybe a studio setting with neutral backgrounds is not something for amateur nude shots, rather choose a comfortable surrounding. I don't mind the whiter legs at all. That's how real people look like. No need to correct that.

Keep up your work and good luck.

I would have loved to delete my comment on Justin's photo, because he was obviously offended by it,  but wasn't able to. Did they change the settings?

I'm neither an expert, nor do I like HDR very much, only when I'm not aware that this technique has been used ;-)

If you want an honest answer: For my taste your photo looks very artificial. The colours look false. I've never seen such colours outside of a studio. Overdone for my taste.

  4. I like the mood of the photo very much and I know how difficult it ist to combine different light sources and reflections. But I would love to see some more details. In b&w you can easily go out earlier for night shots. You'll get a dark sky in the blue hour, but you keep some shadow details. I'm looking forward to see some more of your night shots.
  5. Excellent portrait! The tones, the light, your frameing. Onje of the best nudes I've seen on pn for a very long time. Nude photography in my opinion should reveal different aspects of a persons personality and you simply got it!

    Congrats, Stefan
