  1. <p>When I turn the dial towards the left, the exposure indicator moves to the right, and visa versa. After all these years of using it and complete understanding of the fundamentals behind it, I still almost always start turning in the wrong direction before correcting it.</p>
  2. <p>I've read the manual, googled and searched photo.net archives but can't find an answer. In manual mode, can you change a setting so that you can reverse the direction of the top dial?<br>

Could have sworn there was a method but I could be mixing that up with my newer cameras. I've lived with the current setting for over 7 years, so no big deal if it can't change, but I like to tweak.<br>

    Cheers, Frank.</p>

  3. Thank you everyone for your help. I was able to shoot with more confidence. Shot over 500 photos, with about 20 with too much motion blur. A pretty good success rate. I ended up sticking with iso 1600.

The noise issue was a non event. The photo below was probably one of the darkest scenes. Black dress against a black background with a bright white prop. The 5D performed better than I thought possible.<div>00NdPA-40341484.jpg.3dfb2cba717573afa4ed7f6ad822f217.jpg</div>

  4. Shooting a ballet dress rehersal in about 16 hours from now. Low lights, spot

lights, no flash, relative action. Done lots of searches through the

    archives. I think I'm set.

Using Canon 5D, 70-200 f2.8 IS. Settings AV 2.8, RAW, spot meter, auto focus,

    IS, single shot, iso 1600.

My question, is iso 1600 going to disappoint in terms of noise? I guess when

I'm actually there shooting I should adjust to the lowest iso that results in

    an acceptable shutter speed.

Any other thoughts or pointers appreciated.

    Thanks.

  5. Thanks for all the input and advice. If I can get just one shot like those above I'll be really happy.

OK no Canon EF 2xII extender then. I'll go out now and practice using the custom function 4 setup with the * button on the cats!

    Cheers,

  6. I've done a thorough search through the archives and have gained a lot of info

    from this already.

My specific question is to do with the lens I'll be using.

In a few weeks I'm going on a cruise to photograph whales. The boat is a

catamaran with the deck level about 1.5 metres above water level. It'll be

winter here (east coast Australia) in a few weeks and on the cruise it could be

    anything from sunny to stormy.

The kit I'm taking wiil include; Canon 5D, EOS 70-200 IS f2.8, EOS 24-70 f2.8,

polarising filter, spare batteries, 3 x 1gb memory cards and Epson P-2000 for

image storage. My plan is to shoot in manual with exposure preset and manual

focus, and of course in RAW.

I'm looking at getting a Canon EF 2xII extender to increase the reach of the 70-

    200. Is this a good idea? Those of you with this sort of experience may say

200mm is all you need given the boat can get close to the whales. I'm wary of

having to do too many lens changes on a wet, rocking boat.

I've also read on some sites that the polarising filter may not be a good idea

in this situation given a minimum required 1/500 shutter speed to stop the

action. Any thoughts from experienced people?

ANY advise on this upcoming cruise would be appreciated.

    Cheers,

  7. Just came back from the antique shop. They want AUS$1200, that's about US$940. It seemed complete even with the original A4 ring binder user manual. My top offer would have been $200.
  8. I just saw an EOS DCS 3 in the window of a local antique shop. I looked up

info at the Canon museum website and see it's Canon's first Pro DSLR. It's

only 1.3MP and cost a fortune.

There's no price on the camera and will have a look tomorrow in the shop.

Just for a collector's curiosity, has anyone had recent experience what this

    camera is worth?

  9. Thanks for that answer. Is your 5D also one where the 5th digit of the serial number is a 1?

If the problem is just a display one then that's OK. I was hoping that the bug may have explained some bad flash shots. Must be me then, not the flash.

  10. My 5D is one of those early ones where the fifth digit of the serial number is

a 1. After reading the info on

    http://www.canon.co.jp/Imaging/eos5d/eos5d_firmware-e.html

I see that my version of 5D needs to go back to Canon to rectify a problem

    with "EOS 5D + EF85mm F1.2L + Speedlite580EX." This issue doesn't really

worry me and have left it till now to update.

My issue is that I do use an ST-E2 in conjunction with a 580EX flash, and the

latest firmware update fixes a problem where it stops the system going to

manual mode and keeps it in ETTL mode.

My question is, do I need to send the camera to Canon to fix the earlier

problem before I update this latest version, or if I just install the latest

firmware will it fix the ST-E2/580EX problem?

I guess I could just install it and see what happens but this is the first

time I've posted a question, and at least it isn't a "what lens should I get"

    question.

    Cheers,
