Linda, the background is mostly grasses and bushes about 100 feet away. He is sitting on a bush on the side of a small canyon. I increased the saturation a little to emphasize his beautiful colors. This made the background somewhat darker and greener.

Rene, the cones were a problem with all of the shots. I have another picture in my portfolio you might want to take a look at that has no cones. However, it does not tell the story that I wanted to tell like this one does. -
