  1. Hi,

I love the border around photos that can be achieved with printing

film photos ie the border that is achieved when part of neg/pos is

exposed around the photo. Does anyone know how to do this with

photoshop. I know how to put a stroke around my photos using layer

style, but I was wanting to make this more like a film border.

(I am using photoshop 7). I this makes sense. Thanks

  2. Thanks for your responses here. I think I've got it. I have just bought a digicam, and the cameras profile has been set at sRGB. I have just changed this to Adobe RGB (98), but you are saying that I still need to assign a profile, Adobe RGB (98)in photoshop regardless, for the reasons given. I also understand the reasons all of you are giving to convert, BUT I am currently reading a book called Adobe Photoshop Studio techniques, by Ben Willmore, and he states that if you plan to manipulate an image, than you need to convert to working RGB. My question is why. Why can you not just assign Adobe RGB (98) and work (manipulate) the file as is. What happens if I was to manipulate a file that I had assigned Adobe RGB, as opposed to converting to working RGB? Hope this makes sense.
  3. I probably need to rephrase my question to ask 'what are the issues'. I know that you can get by with older technology, but you cannot necessarily grow with this technology. I am simply trying to go into this with open eyes, and understand the issues. Yes I can get to work in my old car, but what happens if circumstances change, and my work is now 100kms away - the old car just wont do the distance, so it will become obsolete. Changing technology wont stop me from buying a camera (or I'd never end up with a digital camera), I am just wanting to know what may lie ahead. Many thanks
  4. Hi there. I am now in the market for a digital camera, and it seems

that the rapid advances (particularly in sensor technology) are

slowing down and digital cameras are stabilizing and it has become

safe to buy one without fear of rapid obsolescence. I would

appreciate if someone can give me their views on the issues of

changing technology with regard to storage of images?

  5. Hi there. I am currently a student of photography, and on a very

steep learning curve studying digital photography at the moment. I

am currently learning about image sensors, and have found much info

about CCDs and CMOS, but was wondering if anyone knew of a third

sensor using completely different technology? If anyone could steer

me in the right direction with this one, I would be very grateful.

    Thanks

  6. Thanks, I was really just trying to understand. I am currently a student of photography, studying digital at the moment, and my teacher is talking in a level of terminology above me. So when I hear a term that I have not heard before, I try to become familiar with it. I find that asking other photographers on these types of forums is a good way of getting a simple and relevent (to digital photography that is)explanation. I tried doing a general search for magnetic media on the web, but ended up getting very confused - so this gives me a place to start. It sounds like I am taking short cuts, by I have 3 young children under school age, whilst trying to undertake a degree, so I don't have a lot of time. So I very much appeciate the help of other photographers to steer me in the right direction.
  7. I am currently a photography student looking to change from film to

digital. At the moment, I am comparing the D10 with D20, and tossing

up whether to scrape together the cash to purchase the D20. One

feature that interests me with the D20, is the B&W mode. Can anybody

tell me what the differences are with using the B&W mode on the D20

versus converting photos to B&W in photoshop. What are the advantages

    of this mode?
