Fascinating discussion gentlemen. It's a question I have grappled with my whole life as a photographer, as a model, as a woman. I certainly know what sells to the prurient interest of men (and some of us women... no i'm not gay) and some if it is stunning, captivating ect. But could that category be qualified as 'art'...as always, it depends on who's looking. As a model, I have shot self-portraits since the beginning with the intent of yes, revealing the aesthetics qualities I might poses (qualities that ever woman has if you look for it) but more importantly to reveal something about myself, the illusive thing that is uniquely me. It's the same thing I look for when shooting other women. And gosh darnit! It's no easy feat to do. Sometimes, I get completely discouraged with my results and think to heck with it! I'm never going shoot an image that really 'gets below the surface' but that simultaneously reveals the exquisiteness of the female principal. We all want to gaze upon beauty don't we? But we also want to be pulled into the picture with that beauty, to be privy to some level of intimacy or 'knowing' of the subject or simply the mystique that the female sex hold sway over most het men (and some het/bi women!) as well...
Sorry if this was cumbersome or hard to follow...
Wow! This topic is just so loaded! It would require a thesis to really explore it's depths...!

Can anyone recommend links for photographers that shoot really
exceptional male physics with dramatic lighting? I can find a ton
of women (much of it not very imaginative or tasteful) and lots of
stuff geared toward the gay community... But I'm thinking along the
lines of ALbert Watson or Screbneski...?
THx!
