1.
Thanks a lot Al. Very kind of you to offer. Especially as you live quite far away (well at least in the UK an hour drive is nothing to be sniffed at) :-)

I'll give you a shout closer to the time.

Maybe we can open this to the wider Photo.net community. If anyone here lives in or around St Louis and wants to get together for a sunset/dusk shoot of the arch between 20th august & 22nd august, feel free to post here and let's see if we can organise something!

  2.
Thanks Al,

I appreciate you taking the time to offer some advice.

I too have seen several really good abstract architectural style shots of the arch, but that is not my photographic style. I'm more into sweeping vistas and putting iconic structures like the arch into context as part of its surroundings.

I will do some more research, but I kind of know what I want already, and it appears I can't get it on my own (due to danger), so I might have to give up on it.

I'm there 20th-23rd August, so not long left to plan anything.

  3.
Thanks Charles,

Yes I've seen great views from the ponds on either side of the arch. And as I have an IR camera, I could make a good daytime shot. but unfortunately my shooting opportunities are in the evening (I'm there on business and busy during the day), thus I'm not sure it will be ideal location for sunrise/dusk, as it forces you to shoot either directly north or directly south.

Thanks again for your thoughts on this though and all the best.

  4.
Hi Guys,
I’ll be visiting St Louis shortly and hope to photograph the famous arch from the other side of the river at dusk. This is probably the best shot I’ve come across:
http://www.allposters.co.uk/...er-St-Louis-Missouri-USA-Posters_i2602214_.htm

I wanted to ask your advice on some points:

1) Access to the opposite river bank
Google Earth appears to show some railway tracks running along the opposite river bank. Can I (safely and legally) get right to the water?

2) Metal structure in the way
I also noticed from Google Earth that more or less opposite the arch is a long metal structure a few metres into the river. I would guess that it would get in the way of a picture like the one above unless it is shot from the metal platform itself (which I doubt is legal/safe). Is this platform still there, and does it get in the way? If the answer is yes to both, was the above shot taken before this structure was in place?

3) Safety in an unknown city
I’ll get a taxi to drop me off at Casino Queen and then walk to the location. I’ll be shooting on my own at dusk. As I know little of St Louis and this particular area, I wanted to check if it was safe for me to be on my own with some expensive photo equipment.

4) Getting back to my hotel
Finally, I take it that I can go back to the casino and order a cab to pick me up and take me back to my hotel?

5) Better view for sunset/dusk
Do you guys know of a better location to shoot sunset/dusk of the arch? The only other location that comes close appears to be close to the rail bridge:

Thanks in advance for your help

  5. Thanks for the info HS. I'll try to check out the beaches you mentioned. Good to hear about the light levels as I love star trails. Where I live (South East UK) it is so densely populated that startrail photography is impossible.

Thanks again and ahve a good day

  6. Hi All,

I'll be going to Mauritius for 12 nights towards the end of September this year.

I want to get a few scenic landscapes while I am there (see www.solev.net for

examples of the sort of thing I shoot) and wanted advice from any locals or

people who have visited the island already. I will be staying in the South-West

of the island (Flic en Flac) and will hire a car for the duration. My aim is to

get things such as both rocky and sandy beaches, volcanic mountains, waterfalls,

piers going into the sea etc. etc. I mainly like shooting at sunrise and

sunset, although I will also be shooting infrared during the middle of the day.

I'd appreciate any general advice you may have, plus also answers to any of the

    specific questions below:

    1. We are near the Black River Gorges National Park. I've fould it difficult

to find much info on it - what;s there to see, trail maps, opening times, where

the entrances are, etc. Do any of you know any of this info or do you know a

    website that does?

    2. In the NP there is Tamarin Falls. Are they reasonably easy to get to? Are

they seasonal or continuous? Any other info on how best to shoot them?

    3. Are Rochester Falls easy to get to? Are they seasonal or continuous? Any

other info on how best to shoot them?

    4. Where on the island are there photogenic beaches with rock forms?

    5. How long does it take to drive around the island? Is it feasable for me to

try driving from Flic en Flac to the east coast for Sunrise (while the wife is

sleeping), do the shoot and then come back for breakfast?

    6. Is there anything along the South coast worth photographing?

    7. Is there much light polution around Flic en Flac? I'd love to try to do

some Startrail shots on a clear night & want to know whether that would be possible.

Thanks in advance for all your help and have a good day

    Luben

PS: If you have photos to illustrate any of the above, I'd love to see them!!!

  7. Thanks for the detailed answer Shirley.

I myself would be perfectly happy to sleep in the car if it meant spending the night in Deadvlei. Unfortunately I'm not going on a photo expedition with likeminded people, but with my wife, whos idea of sleeping rough is a 3 star hotel. So unless your idea about the accomodation units within the park are true, I guess i'll have to give up on the idea.

Do you know how to find out if the accomodation units are ready? Who would I check with?

Thanks again and have a good day

  8. Hi all,

I'm looking to go to Namibia later in the year & I have some questions.

I'd love to photograph Deadvlei at sunrise/sunset and also at night (start

    rails) like this:

    http://www.artwolfe.com/cgi/shop/detail.cgi?r=DP038

Is this still possible? I'm reading that one is only allowed to enter between

sunrise & sunset & the entry is 65km from Deadvlei. That means that even driving

quickly one can only make it to Deadvlei 1-2 hours after sunrise.

    Is this right?

Thanks a lot in advance and have a good day

    Luben

  9. Your feedback has been truly outstanding. It is a real help to know these things before I get there, as I won't have that many nights in SF.

I will keep checking this thread for other bits of useful info, so if you remember anything else, feel free to post again.

Thanks again for the effort & have a good day

  10. Hi All,

I am visiting San Francisco in a month or so & wanted to get your

feedback on good shooting locations. Here are some good ones I

    already know about:

    1) Golden Gate Bridge with SF in the background

Looking at Google Earth, this seems to be taken from an overlook on

the RHS of the bridge & close to Kirby Cove. Are there any issues

associated in photographing from this spot (photo permits, parking,

security etc.)? Also, will this shot be best at Sunrise or Sunset?

    2) Bay Bridge from Yerba Buena Island (Dusk)

This is a very popular location to shoot from. I've seen two

    variants:

    - from high-up - nearly on top of the freeway, so one can see the

    car light trails

    - From the LHS of the bridge - closer to the shore with the bridge

profile cutting across the SF Skyline

Are both of these areas publically accessible? Are there problems

with parking? Anything else I should be aware of? In some shots

I've seen the Bay Bridge lit up, while in others it is not. Why is

that? Is it only lit on certain days? What time in the evening do

they typically turn the lights on?

    3) Pond & Rotunda at the Palace of Fine Arts (Dusk)

It appears that all I need to do is park along Baker Street (the

street that passes along the back side of the complex, set up my

tripod & start shooting. But is it this easy? Is there anywhere to

park along the street? Is the pond accessible to the public? Is

there an entrance fee? Do I need permissions to take photos there?

    4) Are there any other good cityscape locations that you know off?

Thanks in advance for your help & have a good day

    Luben
